Where in Italy was The Gentlemen filmed?

Most of the Italian scenes were shot in Piedmont in June and July 2025, with the support of Film Commission Torino Piemonte: in Verbania, in its lakeside districts of Pallanza and Intra, and in Stresa, on the western shore of Lake Maggiore. The two main sets stand a few hundred metres apart on Via Vittorio Veneto in Pallanza: the Grand Hotel Majestic and Villa Rusconi-Clerici, with Piazza Garibaldi and San Leonardo church completing the picture. Everything lies within a short walk, which is what made this corner of the lake so practical for a series of this scale.

The Gentlemen hotel: the Grand Hotel Majestic

Opened in 1870 as the Grand Hotel Pallanza, the Majestic forms the long white façade of the Borromean Gulf. A seventh and final floor was added in 1919, the hotel took the name Albergo Maestoso after the First World War, and a restoration in 2010 returned the façade to its original appearance. In season 2, its Belle Époque salons, colonnaded terrace and lakeside garden set the scene for the build-up to the wedding. Today it is a four-star superior hotel and a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, with rooms and suites facing the lake or the Castagnola hill, a wellness area with a heated indoor pool and sauna, a tennis court, a palm-planted garden and a small private beach with its own jetty.

Three venues share the property: La Beola, the gourmet restaurant run by chef Simone Grospietro, Il Portico beneath the loggia overlooking the garden, and Bar La Terrazza for drinks facing the islands. For viewers of the series, the Majestic is the one location you can actually book: unlike the villa next door, it takes overnight guests from spring until late October.

The Italian villa: Villa Rusconi-Clerici

Just a few hundred metres from the Majestic, at Via Vittorio Veneto 12-16, Villa Rusconi-Clerici is an eclectic palazzo with rich neo-Baroque decoration, begun in 1899 for the industrialist Ferdinando Biffi. It replaced Villino Bozzotti, where the Hungarian patriot Stefano Türr, an Austrian officer who deserted to fight alongside Garibaldi and later became a general in the Italian army, settled after 1859. In season 2, the villa plays the Italian home of Bella (Benedetta Porcaroli), and the production built a temporary jetty in front of the garden to film arrivals by Riva, with the Borromean Islands in the background.

The garden was another reason for the choice. Laid out in the English style from 1820 and extended towards the lake at the end of the 19th century, it slopes down to the water in a great lawn; its camellias came from the Rovelli nursery 300 metres away, then the leading Italian grower of acid-loving plants. The villa is not a hotel: it is hired out for weddings, receptions, conventions and events for 50 to 200 seated guests beneath an iron-framed pavilion, with old cellars and kitchens where pizzas are baked in the former bread oven. You cannot stay the night, but you can book it for an event.

The wedding is the heart of episode 6, The Bells Of San Domenico, in which Marco and Eddie mix business with pleasure as the big day approaches. The ceremony was filmed at San Leonardo church in Pallanza, with Piazza Garibaldi on the waterfront as the other key exterior. If you searched for San Domenico, it is the name in the episode title: the church, squares and lakefront you see on screen are all in Pallanza, Verbania.

Which Italian lake? Maggiore, not Lake Como

Yes, but not before spring. The Grand Hotel Majestic closes for the winter from 25 October 2026 and reopens on 4 April 2027, according to its official booking engine. On 20 October 2026, a night for two on Saturday 24 October started at €223 in a Superior room overlooking the hill and €300 with a lake-view balcony. For Saturday 8 May 2027, rates start at €265 and €348 respectively, and at €679 for a lake-view suite with balcony (one night, two adults, rates checked on the official website on 20 October 2026).

Our perspective

Today, television series are doing for the Italian lakes what guidebooks did a century ago: Como had its films, and Maggiore now has its series. The choice is spot on, because the Majestic and Villa Rusconi-Clerici embody the very essence of The Gentlemen: an inherited luxury, slightly faded, where new money comes to buy respectability. For travellers, the address to note is the Majestic, the only one of the two where you can actually sleep, with its best weeks in April and May, from its reopening on 4 April, when the gulf’s camellias and azaleas are in bloom, rather than the summer when the shores fill up. A tip: request a high-floor lake-view room, and ask the hotel to arrange a boat to Isola Bella from its private jetty: it is the very angle the series films from the water.
