Les Arcs, the only resort under five hours

The Les Arcs secret comes down to one direct TGV and a funicular. TGV INOUI 6429 leaves Paris Gare de Lyon at 09:14 and reaches Bourg-Saint-Maurice at 14:03, a 4h 49m run with no change. The funicular then climbs to Arc 1600 in 7 minutes, according to the resort’s website.

In second place, Alpe d’Huez benefits from Grenoble, 3h 01m from Paris by direct TGV. The 15:13 train and the 18:45 coach add up to 5h 14m. But the coach weighs heavily: 1h 42m in the evening, up to 2h 57m on Saturday afternoon. Leave in the morning and allow 5h 43m.

On Saturdays, ten direct TGVs to the slopes

Méribel and Courchevel tie, at 5h 21m from Paris. The same 09:14 TGV to Moûtiers, then 45 minutes by coach to Méribel Centre or Courchevel 1850. The Courchevel coach does, however, take 1h 10m on most services. La Plagne follows at 5h 49m via Aime, Val Thorens at 5h 51m after 1h 15m on the coach.

Val d’Isère (6h 14m) and Tignes (6h 29m) are also reached from Bourg-Saint-Maurice, with 40 to 55 minutes by coach. Megève takes 5h 40m via Sallanches, Avoriaz 6h 08m via Thonon, Morzine 5h 39m.

* Autumn 2026 coach timetable, as the winter one has not yet been published. ** Swiss section calculated on a Saturday in January 2027 (same annual timetable). Les Arcs: minimum time, excluding the wait for the funicular.

Chamonix, Zermatt and St Moritz, no coach needed

Three resorts do without a coach: the train stops in the resort itself. Chamonix (5h 55m) has no direct TGV: Lyria to Bellegarde, TER to Saint-Gervais, then the Mont-Blanc line. The Saturday direct Paris-Saint-Gervais TGV arrives seven minutes too late for the connection.

In Switzerland, Zermatt is 6h 53m away via Lausanne and Visp, right into the car-free village. St Moritz takes 7h 33m: a direct Lyria to Zurich (4h 04m), then Chur.

Serre Chevalier via Italy, Font-Romeu last

For Serre Chevalier, the fastest route runs through Italy. The 09:46 Paris-Milan TGV drops you at Oulx at 14:21; the ZOU ! 76 coach reaches Chantemerle at 15:50, 6h 04m in all. The resort confirms the line: four return trips at weekends, with tickets to be bought online at least 48 hours ahead.

At the bottom of the ranking, Font-Romeu takes 9h 05m: TGV from Montparnasse to Toulouse, TER to Latour-de-Carol, then 39 minutes by coach. On the Yellow Train (Train Jaune), allow 9h 55m.

Which day to travel, and the night train trick

Travelling on a Saturday changes everything. To Moûtiers and Bourg-Saint-Maurice there are 10 direct trains from Paris on Saturday 20 February 2027 (nine TGV INOUI and one OUIGO), six on the Friday and the Sunday, and just one on Tuesday 16th. The first leaves at 06:40, the last at 14:48. To Sallanches and Saint-Gervais, as to Thonon: two direct trains on Saturday, none on Tuesday.

The night train trick: the Intercités de nuit leaves Paris Austerlitz at 20:57 and reaches Briançon at 08:24, on Saturdays 6 and 13 February and most weeknights, but not from 19 to 21 February as things stand. The Paris-Latour-de-Carol service (Fridays in February, Saturdays 6 and 27) arrives at 10:10; a coach reaches Font-Romeu at 11:24.

Two final tips. Allow up to 15 minutes on foot between the train and the coach bays at Bourg-Saint-Maurice, as Altibus advises. And double-check your times on SNCF Connect before buying. For the rest of your stay, here are our ski-in, ski-out hotels and this winter’s new luxury hotels.

Our method: seven Paris stations tested

Every itinerary was calculated using the SNCF theoretical timetables released as open data on 24 October 2026, valid until 31 March 2027, for the four Saturdays of February 2027, departing from Paris’s seven main stations. Total journey time runs from departure in Paris to arrival in the resort, waits included, with at least 15 minutes between a train and a coach. Coach data comes from regional open-data networks, the Swiss section from the official 2027 Swiss timetable.

Four caveats before you book. Winter timetables may still change. The Les Arcs funicular has not yet reopened and its winter dates have not been published. For Switzerland, we used a Saturday in January, as the timetable is the same all year. The Serre Chevalier coach follows its autumn timetable. Ticket prices were not recorded.
