The founder, Dr Joaquín Farnós Gauchía, was a rheumatologist and rehabilitation specialist. In the early 1960s, at the Hélio-Marin centre in Collioure, in the south of France, he discovered the medical use of seawater, which he brought to Spain in 1963. In 1966 he opened a first sea-based rehabilitation centre in Benicàssim, which ran until 1991, before founding Palasiet in 1970. More than 150,000 guests have stayed since, according to the house.

Palasiet puts forward a line from its founder: “the aim is not to live more years, but to live with greater physical, mental and spiritual well-being”. The method rests on five pillars: thalassotherapy, nutrition, physical exercise, personalised medical treatments and emotional balance, which ranks alongside the others.

The team brings together doctors, nutritionists, physiotherapists, trainers, beauticians, spa technicians and chefs; Dr Paula Paredes practises integrative medicine there. The word biohacking is not banned, a talk is even devoted to it, but it remains one topic among many. Other addresses bet on the giant clinic, such as the future Oakmond Marbella, or on sport, such as Iniala Valletta in Malta.

What does the Longevity week include?

The programme lasts 7 nights (6 days of treatments) or 10 nights. It opens with a check-up: a medical consultation devoted to longevity, an oxidative stress test, a full hormone panel, an assessment of cardiovascular and respiratory capacity, lab tests with metabolic markers, body composition by bioimpedance and a physical assessment with a trainer.

Each day then brings the seawater circuit, supervised strength training and aqua-gym sessions, a physiotherapy session, a seaweed wrap, a massage, a facial, a nutrition talk and a healthy cooking class. On departure, guests receive three reports : medical, nutritional and physical, with exercises to keep up at home. Some group activities are mostly held in Spanish, but an alternative is always offered.

The renovated clinic covers more than 2,700 m² and houses its own departments of medical hydrology, physiotherapy, aesthetic medicine, nutrition and training. The biomarine circuit combines a large seawater pool at around 35 °C with hydromassage loungers and jets, a salt sauna, a marine steam bath and a contrast pool. Add to that a 24 °C seawater circuit for circulation, a gym and two outdoor pools, one of them panoramic.

Palasiet has 78 rooms in six categories, from Eco-Comfort to the Suite Palasiet, all with large terraces; most look out over the sea and the bay of Benicàssim. The estate spreads over 20,000 m² of gardens and pine forest, 50 metres from the beach and the promenade, at the foot of the Desierto de las Palmas nature park. The Vía Verde, a former railway line turned walking path, runs along the coast. Further north, near Barcelona, the Le Méridien Ra hotel also keeps thalassotherapy alive, in a sanatorium dating from 1929.
