A 246-metre station in the heart of the Pyrenees
The numbers convey the scale. Inaugurated in 1928, Canfranc station unfurls a 246-metre facade between the rocky slopes of the Aragonese Pyrenees, which once made it Europe’s second-largest station by surface area. An icon of industrial architecture, the ensemble was listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2002 and belongs to Spain’s railway heritage, sealing the rescue of a monument that dereliction had almost claimed.

104 rooms between Art Deco and contemporary design
The conversion avoids pastiche. The 104 rooms and suites unfold warm volumes where discreet Art Deco elements converse with contemporary design, creating an atmosphere at once nostalgic and current. Duplex and junior suites open onto the peaks, while the wellness area gathers a heated pool, a spa and a fitness studio. A library doubling as a cocktail bar occupies one of the historic volumes.
Canfranc Express, a Michelin-starred table inside the old station
Gastronomy is central to the project. The Canfranc Express restaurant, awarded a Michelin star in 2024 and a Repsol Guide Sun, is led by chef Eduardo Salanova, with Ana Acín directing the dining room. His cuisine fuses Aragonese tradition and avant-garde technique in a setting that replays the golden age of rail travel, placing the address firmly on Spain’s gastronomic map.
Skiing, bunkers and high mountains
The setting adds a destination dimension. The hotel sits minutes from the Candanchú and Astún ski resorts and the Somport pass, at its most beautiful under snow. In summer, the hiking trails of the Aragonese Pyrenees take over, and the hotel arranges singular experiences such as the bunker route, the military fortifications built above the village. Rates start at around 250 euros per night.
When railway heritage turns into hospitality
Operated by the Barceló group, the hotel opened in early 2023 under the Royal Hideaway flag and was named Europe’s best hotel rehabilitation project in its first year. It illustrates a European movement in which stations, abbeys, prisons and factories become places to stay, championed by local authorities who see hospitality as a lever for heritage rescue. At Canfranc, hotel-keeping achieved what neither rail nor conventional tourism could: giving a 246-metre monument its purpose back.
