The Clefs d’Or are not requested, they are earned: it requires several years of experience in conciergierie, two member sponsors, and an application reviewed by the national chapter. Dean Hughes, head concierge of the DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station, has just been inducted, and it is the first time a member of this establishment has worn the crossed keys.
1. A first for the establishment
In a hotel market as dense as Amsterdam’s, the international Clefs d’Or association remains a rare marker. The presentation ceremony was held at the hotel, attended by senior group executives, including David Kelly, senior vice president for continental Europe, and Christian Charnaux, chief development officer.
The presence of this level of management for an individual distinction is not insignificant: it positions the conciergierie as a brand asset, rather than just another service function.
2. Sixteen years in the same hotel
At 56, Dean Hughes has over twenty-three years of experience in conciergierie. He joined the team at the DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station in 2010, representing sixteen years in the same establishment.
This longevity is precisely what the distinction rewards: the Clefs d’Or value the address book and the deep knowledge of a city, two things that can only be built over time and cannot be transferred from one hotel to another.
3. What this says about the upscale segment
The award of the Clefs d’Or to a concierge from the DoubleTree network is worth noting: the distinction is historically associated with palaces and grand luxury properties. Seeing it awarded in an upscale establishment, adjacent to a central station, shifts the boundaries.
The hotel’s general manager, Floris Licht, highlighted the loyalty and consistency of his head concierge, two qualities that are highly valuable to an operator in a market with high staff turnover.
4. Our take
As the hotel industry automates check-in, keys, and payment, the conciergierie remains one of the few touchpoints that technology cannot absorb. Local expertise, intuition, and the ability to secure a table on a fully booked night cannot be digitised.
It is also a lesson in recruitment: the distinction does not reward a hotel category, it rewards a person. Groups that forget this train concierges for their competitors.
