The camp occupies an estate of 55 acres of savannah, about 22 hectares, in the Ikoma Valley, west of Serengeti National Park. Buildings will cover no more than 30% of the land. Guests will arrive via the Fort Ikoma airstrip, 10 minutes away, or by road, 1 hr 35 min from the Seronera airstrip. The Fort Ikoma gate is 11 km away and Robanda village 6 km. The Serengeti is also awaiting the Upeo Serengeti lodge, due in July 2027.

Who is behind Mereshi, after Mapito?

The owner and developer, Delaware Investments, has already opened Mapito Safari Camp in the Serengeti, the first safari camp in the Autograph Collection. The Marriott Bonvoy brand works on a franchise basis and Mereshi’s operator has not been named; its portfolio stretches from the savannah to city addresses, such as the Stripes Singapore Chinatown hotel.

The architecture is by Dunia Design, an Arusha-based practice that also designed Mapito. Inspired by the umbrella thorn acacia (Acacia tortilis), it combines wood, canvas, woven elements and local materials, touching the ground as lightly as possible.

The 18 raised tented suites all follow the same layout: 50 m² inside and 45 m² of terrace, or 95 m² each. All face east, towards the sunrise. Dawn coffee and lantern-lit dinners will be served there.

The camp will have a restaurant, a bar, a lounge, a craft shop and a boma, the campfire enclosure. On the announced programme: 4×4 game drives, sundowners, fireside storytelling and Tanzanian music. For another brand-new safari camp, see the Anantara Kafue River camp in Zambia.

95% of materials made in Tanzania

According to the developer, around 95% of the materials, furniture and equipment, from canvas to timber, were made or bought in Tanzania, and more than 150 Tanzanians worked on the build. The camp is expected to create around 100 permanent jobs, more than 90% of them held by Tanzanians.

With the NGO Hope for Girls and Women and the Give a Future Foundation, the non-profit arm of Delaware Investments, a hospitality mentoring programme will house and train at least five young women at the camp, with accommodation, meals and daily expenses covered. The foundation also funds healthcare in Robanda, including the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of children with sickle cell disease.
