The house was commissioned in 1756 by the 2nd Earl of Egremont. This Palladian-style townhouse, inspired by the villas of the Italian architect Palladio, was home to the Duke of Cambridge, who gave it his name, and received Queen Victoria, according to Auberge Collection’s press release.

In the mid-19th century, Prime Minister Lord Palmerston turned it into a second 10 Downing Street. From 1865 to 1999, the Naval and Military Club, nicknamed the “In & Out”, hosted officers here. The designer Jean-Louis Deniot, who restored it, compares the dormant building to “a true Sleeping Beauty”.

The owner, Reuben Brothers, has entrusted its management to Auberge Collection, already present in Europe in Florence, Geneva, Santorini and at the Domaine des Etangs, in Charente. The hotel is the heart of a one-billion-pound project on the Piccadilly Estate. Announced for 2026 in a press release from October 2025, the opening is now set for 1 February 2027.

Jean-Louis Deniot had every piece of furniture designed by his studio, so that each room feels like “a London apartment”. Laura Gonzalez, for her part, has designed the bar, the spa and a private club due later in 2027.

The historic suites bear the imprint of queens such as Victoria and Elizabeth II. The Palmerston Suite, 109 m² overlooking the courtyard, keeps the private study that once belonged to the Prime Minister; the Elizabeth Suite spreads over 139 m² beneath five-metre ceilings with their original plasterwork.

At the top, the Piano Nobile takes up the entire principal floor, that of the reception rooms: 600 m², up to six bedrooms and two private terraces, with views over Green Park.

The restaurant will be Major’s, by Major Food Group, the New York house behind Carbone and Torrisi. It blends the American chophouse, a temple of grilled meat, with the London grill, in the restored Georgian ballroom and the jasmine-lined courtyard.

On the menu, seafood platters, caviar and spit-roasted rib of beef, carved at the table; at the bar, at least ten versions of the martini. The Drawing Rooms will serve afternoon tea, alongside the Reuben Bar, its cigar lounge and the In & Out Bar.
