GOCO Hospitality expands Fivelements from Bali to Montenegro: Samui in 2027, Switzerland in 2029

Fivelements once consisted of a single address along the Ayung River in Ubud. Fifteen years later, the Balinese brand acquired in 2024 by GOCO Hospitality has announced four destinations across three continents, from Thailand to Montenegro, with a schedule running until 2030. Above all, this roadmap illustrates what high-end wellness has become: a hotel asset deployed like a retail chain.

Bali first, because that is where it all began

The Ubud retreat remains the matrix. It reopens in late 2026 following an initial redesign, ahead of a more extensive transformation scheduled for 2028, a sign that the new owner wants to first upgrade the founding address before duplicating it. Fivelements built its reputation here on an approach blending Balinese healing treatments, raw plant-based cuisine and bamboo architecture set in the jungle above the sacred Ayung River. GOCO intends to export this exact vocabulary.

Samui in 2027, featuring a longevity clinic

This is the opening that matters most for the brand. Fivelements Samui is set to open in early 2027 in Thailand and become the group’s flagship, featuring an integrated longevity clinic, meaning a medical facility grafted onto a resort. In the span of three years, longevity has become the primary selling point of high-end wellness, changing the very nature of these establishments: they no longer sell just a stay, but a protocol, with longer durations and corresponding price points. The gamble is not without risk, as it requires medical recruitment that few hotel operators know how to manage.

Europe in the crosshairs, Switzerland then Montenegro

The two European addresses are further out, and more revealing. Switzerland in 2029, Montenegro in 2030: the former for the medical credibility the country confers regarding treatments, the latter for a coastline and mountain landscape still largely untapped by international luxury. Kolašin, in northern Montenegro, is a mountain resort that the country is seeking to reposition. A Spanish address is also in development, with no timeline communicated. For the portfolio as a whole, the group highlights a development framework centered on energy optimization, wastewater reduction and regenerative environmental practices.

Our perspective

Four openings in five years for a brand that previously had only one address is the pace of a chain, not a hotel. The entire question is whether what made Fivelements unique·its minuscule scale and remote location·can survive duplication. Previous industry precedents are hardly reassuring: most retreat brands that transformed into collections lost what set them apart along the way. Conversely, without capital, these addresses remain fragile and isolated gems. The key milestone to watch will be Samui in 2027: that is where we will see whether the brand is growing or diluting itself.
