Festive programmes often look the same: a tree, a gala dinner, fireworks. Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita has chosen to base its own on a specific local reference, the cosmogony of the Wixárika people and the sacred site of Tatei Haramara, which this culture considers one of the origins of the world. The programme is called ‘Tides of Light’ and runs from 14 December to 2 January.
1. A local narrative rather than seasonal decor
Overlooking the waters of the Riviera Nayarit, the resort draws on Wixárika cosmogony, whose territory covers the Sierra Madre Occidental and of which Tatei Haramara, off the coast of San Blas, is one of the major sacred sites. The programming aligns with this heritage rather than importing a European winter imaginary to a tropical coast.
The centrepiece is a hand-carved Christmas tree inspired by coral reefs, adorned with frosted glass and traditional beadwork created by local artisans. Beadwork is precisely one of the crafts by which Wixárika art is identified.
2. Kerala invited to the Mexican Pacific
The culinary highlight of the season is a residency: that of Michelin-starred chef Justin Paul at Tamai restaurant, from 14 to 30 December 2026. Entitled ‘The Spice Coast’, it blends the coastal cuisine of Kerala with the seafood of Punta Mita.
The pairing is less arbitrary than it seems: the Malabar Coast and the Mexican Pacific share a common culinary language of grilled fish, coconut and chillies, and it is on this shared ground that the menu is built.
Alongside this, Sun & Seed opens, a beachside restaurant helmed by chef Leslie Durso, focused on wellness and ingredient sourcing. The festivities culminate on 31 December with ‘Midnight Tides’, a gala dinner followed by a celebration on Cuevas beach.
3. Copal, nopal and agave at Apuane Spa
The wellness offering follows the same logic. During the festive season, Apuane Spa offers treatments built on ingredients from traditional Mexican pharmacopoeia: copal, a resin burned as incense since pre-Hispanic times, nopal and agave.
The highlighted experience is the Mexican Sensory Ritual, which begins with a brown sugar and orange zest exfoliation, followed by a warm cocoa and wild honey wrap. Family sound therapy workshops and Pilates classes complete the menu.
4. What this season says about the market
In the ultra-luxury segment, the festive season is when resorts copy each other the most. By anchoring its own in an identified culture and local craftsmanship, the property creates a narrative that its direct competitors in Riviera Nayarit cannot replicate.
It is also a response to guest expectations: at these price points, demand is shifting away from mere decor and towards experiences that can only be found in that specific location.
