The 25 most haunted hotels in the United States in 2026: where to stay for Halloween

On 5 October 2026, Historic Hotels of America published its annual list of the 25 most haunted historic hotels in the United States, from Colonial Williamsburg (1750) to the Queen Mary ocean liner (1936). It is not a ranking: the hotels are listed by construction date. To join this programme of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a hotel must be at least 50 years old and be designated a National Historic Landmark or listed in (or eligible for) the National Register of Historic Places. From more than 300 members, the Historic Hotels of America team chose these 25 for the quality and quantity of their legends, their willingness to share them and their Halloween 2026 offers.

In brief
  • 📜 The list · 25 historic hotels chosen by Historic Hotels of America, announced on 5 October 2026 and ordered by construction date, not by how haunted they are.

The 25 haunted hotels on the 2026 list

These legends add to the unique character of the hotels, which treasure them, says Lawrence Horwitz, executive vice president of Historic Hotels of America and Historic Hotels Worldwide. The list follows the order of the press release, from the oldest building to the most recent; the one exception is the Hotel del Coronado (1888), which comes before the Jekyll Island Club (1887).
