Two hours’ drive from Los Angeles, in the San Bernardino Mountains, this small cabin is rented out in its entirety by Unique Stays Club, a host specialising in themed stays. It sleeps four, with one bedroom, two beds and one bathroom, and holds a 4.98 out of 5 rating on its Airbnb listing.

The centrepiece is the bathroom, a replica of the one in Kubrick’s film: an axe sticks out of the door and you can poke your head through to re-enact the cult scene. Otherwise it works as a real bathroom, with a hot shower, toiletries and a hairdryer.

In the living room, decked out in 1970s colours, effects go off at random: flickering lights, static on the old TV, ghostly noises. A switch in the hallway turns it all off for quieter nights.

The bedroom is lined with posters and collectibles, and an escape-room-style puzzle challenges you to open the locked cabinet of a missing aunt, according to the Unique Stays Club website.

For the nights of 30 October to 1 November 2026, Airbnb showed $420 (≈ €373) a night for two, or $898.80 (≈ €799) including taxes for the Halloween weekend. Check-in from 3pm.

The Stanley, the room 217 where King had a dream

Opened in 1909 by F.O. Stanley, inventor of the Stanley Steamer steam car, this white, red-roofed hotel looks out over Estes Park, the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. It has 220 rooms and lodgings.

Stephen King stayed here in 1974. The hotel says it was in room 217, after a vivid nightmare, that he began to imagine The Shining, published in 1977. The Stanley does not appear in Kubrick’s film, but Stephen King’s 1997 miniseries was shot here.

The 217 Spirited Grand King is one of the hotel’s thirteen so-called “spirited” rooms. Some guests say they found their shoes lined up at the foot of the bed. It can be booked directly on the official website, which only shows the rate once you have picked your dates.

If you are not staying the night, the one-hour Shining tour costs $35 (≈ €31) in 2026: it features one of the axes from the filming and the Shining suite in the 1909 Caretaker’s Cottage. On 31 October, a special Halloween ghost tour runs all day.

Timberline Lodge, Kubrick’s Overlook in Oregon

On the south slope of Mount Hood, at around 1,830 metres, Timberline Lodge was built in eighteen months and dedicated by Franklin D. Roosevelt on 28 September 1937. It has been a National Historic Landmark since 1977 and is still open summer and winter.

The lodge says so itself: its exterior shots were used to portray the Overlook Hotel throughout The Shining, starring Jack Nicholson. It has made the film the theme of its Halloween night.

For Halloween, the lodge offers its “The Shining Hotel Package” on the nights of 30 and 31 October 2026, from $250 to 485 (≈ €222 to 431) plus taxes. It includes the room, two Jack Torrance cocktails and a screening of the film at 10pm in the Barlow Room, with the code SPOOKY (official page).

You dine in the dining room where Clarice confronts the killer. The basement has become an interactive workshop, with a Singer sewing machine, mannequins and music triggered as you walk past.

The listing sleeps eight in four bedrooms, decorated for Halloween. The weekend of 31 October was already taken; the night of Tuesday 3 November 2026 cost $1,205 (≈ €1,071), or $1,337.55 with taxes. In early December, the price drops to $917 a night, before discounts.

Stranger Things: a night at the Byers’ house

In Fayetteville, twenty minutes from Atlanta airport, this is the house whose exterior was used for every scene at Joyce, Jonathan and Will Byers’ home in the Netflix series. The interiors were filmed in a studio.

Fans have furnished it as if it were 1983: a wall of fairy lights, an “Upside Down” bedroom, VHS tapes and BMX bikes. The project is not affiliated with Netflix, the listing points out.

The house sleeps up to six and is rated 4.98 out of 5 from 280 reviews. Halloween and early November were fully booked; from 20 to 22 November 2026, a night cost $2,115 (≈ €1,879), or $4,663 including taxes instead of $5,263.

In the Texas Hill Country, on Lake LBJ, the Antlers Inn opened on 1 May 1901 for railway passengers. Right across from it stands the Victorian house from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Tobe Hooper’s 1974 film, moved here from Round Rock.

The hotel turned it into a restaurant: first the Grand Central Café in 2012, now Hooper’s, a tribute to the director. It serves three meals a day from Wednesday to Sunday.

For overnight stays, the Antlers Inn rents out six renovated suites, for guests aged 16 and over, plus cottages and old railway cabooses. Rates appear on the official booking engine once you have chosen your dates.

Horror movie houses you can no longer rent

The Poltergeist house in Simi Valley, promoted by Airbnb in autumn 2025, no longer has a listing online. The Scream house, in 2021, and Dracula’s castle in Romania, in 2016, only opened during special campaigns run by Airbnb.

For Friday the 13th fans, Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco in New Jersey has no overnight stays in 2026 but opens for tours on Friday 13 November, at $169 (≈ €150). And for truly haunted nights, see the 25 most haunted hotels in the US and Europe’s haunted luxury hotels.

Book before Saturday 31 October

According to Airbnb, searches for the Halloween weekend are up almost 15% year on year, and almost 45% among Gen Z. Horror movie houses go first: aim for a weeknight or November.

Read each house’s rules: no parties, outdoor cameras. These addresses join the ranks of unusual stays, such as the giant cereal box from Cereal Stays in Texas.
