World’s 50 Best Becomes “The 50”: First Name Change Since 2002, with Hotels Launching in Paris

It took twenty-four years for the name to change. World’s 50 Best, which has ranked restaurants, then bars, hotels and vineyards since 2002, is becoming The 50, a unique umbrella brand whose first public appearance will be the hotel awards ceremony in Paris in September. The ranking’s website has already transitioned to the50.com.

One umbrella brand, four rankings

The principle is simple and long overdue: until now, each guide bore its full name, and the collection lacked clarity. The 50 is becoming the parent brand, with each ranking falling in line beneath it: The 50 Best Restaurants, The 50 Best Bars, The 50 Best Hotels, The 50 Best Vineyards. Regional spin-offs follow the same grammar, with the Asian bar list becoming The 50 Best Bars Asia. The editorial platform Discovery, which lists addresses beyond the main rankings, becomes The 50 Discovery. British group William Reed, owner of the portfolio, announces a visual identity built around a gemstone formed of fifty elements.

Hotels lead the way, and it sends a signal

The timing is deliberate. It is the hotel ranking, the youngest of the four, that inaugurates the new identity during its September 2026 ceremony in Paris, ahead of a gradual rollout across the other lists throughout the year and beyond. Launched in 2023, The 50 Best Hotels established itself faster than expected in a sector already crowded with awards, by importing a voting mechanism by an international panel from the restaurant world. The extended list, from 51st to 100th place, has already been unveiled for the 2026 edition.

What this says about the ranking market

A name change is costly and is rarely justified by aesthetics alone. This move chiefly signals that the group is no longer selling separate lists, but an ecosystem encompassing its ceremonies, brand partnerships and editorial platform. For the hotel industry, the practical consequence is clear: featuring in The 50 Best Hotels becomes a commercial asset comparable to a star, with the same impact on rates and the same necessity to defend it every year. Properties that once overlooked these guides are now watching them very closely.
