- 🏨 The group · Okura Nikko Hotel Management, subsidiary of Hotel Okura Co. (founded in 1958, headquartered in Tokyo): three brands, Okura Hotels & Resorts, Nikko Hotels International, and Hotel JAL City.
- 📊 The portfolio · 80 hotels and 24,036 rooms as of July 1, 2026, including 53 in Japan and 27 abroad: the largest international portfolio of any Japanese hotel operator.
- 🤝 The model · Growth through management contracts, without acquiring real estate, alongside long-term local partners: Asset World Corporation in Thailand, KK Universal in Turkey.
- 🇹🇭 Bangkok, the showcase · The Okura Prestige Bangkok since 2012, the Grand Nikko Bangkok Sathorn in 2025, the Okura Prestige Sukhumvit and a ryokan-style resort in Chiang Mai in 2028: eventually seven hotels in Thailand.
- 🇹🇷 Cappadocia · Hotel Okura Thermal Resort & Spa Cappadocia, a thermal and wellness resort in Mustafapaşa, management contract signed on May 22, 2026, with an opening scheduled for 2028.
- 🇪🇺 Europe · A single Okura on the continent, the Hotel Okura Amsterdam, opened in 1971 on the Amstel.
In an industry where major groups count hotels by the thousands, Okura Nikko lines up 80. The number is small, the model precise. The hotel subsidiary of Hotel Okura, born in 1962 with the Hotel Okura Tokyo, grows without owning real estate, through management contracts and long-term alliances, focusing its openings where it already has a partner: eventually seven hotels in Thailand, a thermal resort in Cappadocia announced for 2028, and a European presence still limited to Amsterdam. Here are the figures and the logic of a group that prefers patience to volume.

80 hotels, 24,036 rooms: the most international of Japanese operators

Hotel Okura Co. was founded in 1958 and opened its first hotel in Tokyo in 1962, under the motto “Best A.C.S.”: best accommodation, best cuisine, best service. In 2010, the group acquired 79.6% of JAL Hotels from Japan Airlines, along with its Nikko and JAL City brands, before merging its management activities into a single company in 2015, Okura Nikko Hotel Management. As of July 1, 2026, it operates 80 hotels and 24,036 rooms, including 53 establishments in Japan and 27 abroad, making it the largest international portfolio among Japanese hotel operators. The flagship, The Okura Tokyo, was rebuilt and reopened in 2019; five of the group’s addresses feature in the 2026 Forbes Travel Guide.
The model: management contracts and long-term partners
The group states it clearly in its corporate presentation: it intends to “expand its portfolio through hotel management contracts worldwide.” In Japan, Hotel Okura owns its grand properties; outside Japan, Okura Nikko provides the brand, teams, and omotenashi (Japanese hospitality), leaving the real estate to local investors. The difference from major groups lies in the number of partners: Okura chooses few, and signs multiple hotels with them at once. In Thailand, the framework agreement concluded in January 2025 with Asset World Corporation provides for two new addresses at once; in Turkey, the group announces it will continue its growth “exclusively” with KK Universal.
Bangkok, the showcase: eventually seven hotels in Thailand
The Thai capital is the laboratory for this method. The Okura Prestige Bangkok, opened in 2012 in the Park Ventures tower, was followed by the Grand Nikko Bangkok Sathorn in 2025. With Asset World Corporation, the group will add the Okura Prestige Sukhumvit in the Thonglor district in 2028, along with a ryokan-style resort in Chiang Mai, bringing its total number of hotels in Thailand to seven. The general manager of the Okura Prestige Bangkok, Niek Hammer, has spent his entire career within the group, from Amsterdam to Macau: the internal training of managers is the other pillar of the model, alongside close collaboration between hotel teams and property owners.
Cappadocia in 2028: a 102-room thermal resort in Mustafapaşa

The Turkish project illustrates the group’s patience. First announced in June 2015 under the name Okura Spa & Resort Cappadocia, featuring 102 rooms, it has been redesigned and expanded to become a luxury thermal and wellness resort. On May 22, 2026, Hotel Okura signed a management contract in Tokyo with Oluşum Grubu, the hotel company backed by KK Universal, for a 2028 opening in the historic village of Mustafapaşa, in the heart of UNESCO-listed Cappadocia. Operations will be entrusted to Okura Saraylı Hotel Management, a joint venture created in 2015 with local partners. Thermal springs, a spa, and Japanese hospitality set against a backdrop of fairy chimneys: this is the first time the brand is associating its name with a thermal resort outside Asia.

Europe, or the Amsterdam exception
The Hotel Okura Amsterdam, opened in 1971 on the Amstel, was the first Okura outside Japan and remains the only one in Europe. Its general manager, Michiel Roelfsema, also comes from within the company. Fifty-five years later, the group still has no address in Paris or London, and its executives have long maintained that both capitals are part of their ambitions; nothing has been signed to date. Okura’s logic·prioritizing a reliable partner over a location·explains this slowness just as much as real estate prices in European capitals. Our perspective
One could view Okura’s 80 hotels as lagging behind or as a deliberate choice. We lean toward the latter. At a time when major chains sign hundreds of contracts a year and struggle to deliver on service promises at each one, an operator that trains its managers for twenty years and only opens where it knows its owner delivers precisely what luxury travelers seek: consistency. The test will come with Cappadocia, a thermal resort far from Asia in a volatile tourist market. If it matches the standard of Amsterdam and Bangkok, Paris and London will follow one day; if it falls short, the group will at least have had the wisdom not to spread itself too thin.
