Vienna Christmas market 2026: 8 luxury hotels near the Rathausplatz, from the Sacher to the Imperial

The Wiener Christkindlmarkt opens on 13 November 2026 in front of Vienna’s City Hall and stays until 26 December. We picked eight luxury hotels less than 25 minutes’ walk from the Rathausplatz, timed the actual route and, on 30 October, checked the price of a night from Friday 4 to Saturday 5 December for two: from €846 to €1,920 a night, and some grand hotels already insist on two nights.

In brief

When does the Rathausplatz market open?

According to the market’s official website and the Vienna Tourist Board, the Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt runs for 44 days, from Friday 13 November to Saturday 26 December 2026, daily from 10am to 10pm, closing early at 6.30pm on 24 December. The stalls huddle in front of the neo-Gothic façade of City Hall, around the great Christmas tree and a 12-metre tiered carousel.

Right next door, in the City Hall park, the Eistraum am Christkindlmarkt stays open until 6 January 2027: ice trails where you can skate from 10am to 10pm, except on 31 December. For a comparison with France, see also our hotels closest to the Strasbourg Christmas market.

Six more markets, from Schönbrunn to Am Hof

Vienna has plenty of other markets, each with its own dates. The earliest is the one at Schönbrunn Palace, open from 6 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 with more than 90 stalls, from 10am to 9pm (until 4pm on 24 December, then 7pm until 6 January). It is the only one on the list that takes you out of the historic centre.

  • Am Hof, on the square of the same name in the 1st district: from 13 November to 23 December, 11am to 9pm on weekdays, from 10am Friday to Sunday.
  • Spittelberg, in the Biedermeier lanes of the 7th district: more than 120 stallholders from 13 November to 23 December, 2pm to 9.30pm on weekdays, from 11am at weekends.
  • Art Advent on Karlsplatz, in front of the Karlskirche: from 13 November to 23 December, 12pm to 8pm.
  • The K&K market at the Belvedere, in front of the palace: from 20 November to 31 December, generally 11am to 9pm (from 10am at weekends), until 5pm on 24 and 31 December.
  • The Christmas Village on Stephansplatz, at the foot of the cathedral: from 6 November to 26 December, 11am to 9pm.

All these dates are those published by the Vienna Tourist Board for the 2026 season. Am Hof, Stephansplatz and Karlsplatz are less than 15 minutes’ walk from the hotels in this guide, so you can take in two or three markets in one evening.

What to know before you book

Advent weekends are the most expensive: five weeks ahead, three grand hotels were already not offering the single night of Friday 4 December. Aim for a weeknight if you can, and choose flexible rates, which cost 11 to 25% more here but let you change your mind.

The Hotel Bristol, next to the Opera, is closed for renovation: Marriott expects guests back from December 2027. Another change in Vienna this year: the Palais Coburg has become a guesthouse with 36 suites. And to put these prices in context, see our survey of 5-star hotel prices in Europe.
