Andermatt Hospitality Management, the hotel arm of the Andermatt Swiss Alps group, announced on 29 October 2026 the appointment of Lorenz Maurer as general manager. He arrives on 1 December 2026, roughly a year before opening, to lead the pre-opening phase: setting up the hotel, recruiting and training the teams, and defining service standards. He will then run the property.

Lorenz Maurer is currently area general manager of the Grand Hotel Belvedere in Wengen, which he opened after a complete renovation. He previously ran The Cambrian in Adelboden, as well as hotels in Europe and the United States. “The Alpinist is designed for a guest I know well: people who train and push themselves in the mountains, and who expect the same level of service once they are back,” he says in the press release.

An “Alpine Butler” for mountain athletes

The concept blends mountain sports culture with luxury hospitality. At the heart of the experience are an Alpine Butler service and an Alpine Experience Hub, a base dedicated to mountain activities. Add to that a large training room and a cultural programme centred on the mountains.

For James Lamb, CEO of Andermatt Hospitality Management, this is a category of hotel the Swiss Alps have never seen before. The group sees it as one of its flagship hotels, set to strengthen Andermatt’s standing as an international destination, summer and winter alike.

The complex will bring together 66 hotel rooms and 164 residences, from simple studios to multi-level penthouses. Owners will be able to place their home in the hotel’s rental programme, which will then offer it to travellers. Room rates have not yet been published.

The spa will cover 2,300 m², with a panoramic pool on the roof facing the Urseren valley, the high valley in which Andermatt sits. It will feature steam and salt saunas, a Kneipp garden, where you walk through cool water following the method of the same name, yoga and Pilates studios, and training areas.

Who is designing The Alpinist? Snøhetta and Nau2

The architecture is by a partnership of Nau2 and Holzer Kobler Architekturen, two Zurich practices, and the interiors by the Norwegian studio Snøhetta, based in Oslo. Implenia is building the complex for Andermatt Swiss Alps; work began in March 2025.

The façade is clad in a custom-designed solar skin and the building will be heated by a carbon-neutral local network. The images released so far are all renderings: the hotel is under construction.

After The Chedi, the group’s third hotel

The Alpinist will be the third hotel in the Andermatt Swiss Alps project, after The Chedi Andermatt, which opened in December 2013, and the Radisson Blu Hotel Reussen, in December 2018. The Chedi features in our selection of the best luxury hotels in the Swiss Alps.

No restaurant or chef has yet been announced for The Alpinist. Food lovers already have an address in the village: IGNIV by Andreas Caminada, a restaurant independent of the hotel, won two MICHELIN stars in October 2025 with chef Valentin Sträuli.
