Since 1 October 2026, the Heilthermen Resort in Bad Waltersdorf, Styria, has only welcomed guests aged 14 and over, both in the thermal baths and the hotel. On the same day, the thermal resort inaugurated its Quell-Sauna, a 60-seat sauna overlooking the forest, following a one-million-euro investment in its sauna facilities.

A 60-seat sauna overlooking the forest
The Quell-Sauna is heated to between 80 and 85 °C. Its light wood tiered seating surrounds a central stove and faces large windows looking out onto the forest. It can accommodate up to 60 people and was inaugurated during an opening weekend on 1 and 2 October 2026. The Steirer-Sauna was renovated at the same time, with new wood and a modernised interior. The resort now features 16 saunas: 10 at the Heiltherme, the thermal baths open to the public, and 6 at the Hoteltherme, reserved for hotel guests.
Aufguss rituals redesigned by the resort team

The aufguss is a ritual where the sauna master pours scented water onto hot stones and then circulates the steam with a fan. In Bad Waltersdorf, the sauna team has revamped its sessions with specialist Gerald Gärtner: selected herbs, hydrosols, and oils, a watering can to dose the water, and fan movements to distribute heat and aromas. Saunameister Michi Zinggl is part of the team leading them.
Why the resort is moving to a 14+ policy

The hotel and its Hoteltherme were already reserved for adults. Since 1 October 2026, the rule has been extended to the public Heiltherme: the thermal baths and hotel now only accept guests aged 14 and over. The resort explains that it wants to offer “even more peace and space for adults” and presents itself as the first “adults only” thermal resort in Styrie. This is not “adults only” in the strictest sense: teenagers aged 14 and over remain welcome. The resort is managed by Gernot Deutsch.
Nine pools at 36 °C at the Heiltherme
The thermal water is drawn from a depth of between 1,200 and 1,400 m, at 62 °C at the source, at a rate of 1.9 million litres per day. It is served at around 36 °C in the pools, and around 29 °C in the swimming pools. The Heiltherme covers approximately 25,000 m², with 9 thermal pools and 10 saunas. The Hoteltherme adds 4 pools, 6 saunas, and a natural swimming pond. Day admission costs €42 on weekdays and €45.50 on weekends, public holidays, and during vacations, with a €12 supplement for the saunas; from 6 pm, evening admission is €24 on weekdays.
183 rooms, from €180 per night
The hotel has 183 rooms and suites, including 132 new ones, recognised by the ICONIC Award and the LOOP Design Award 2025. Superior rooms are 25 m², while suites range from 42 to 50 m². The “Sonntag-Montag” offer provides one night with access to the thermal baths and half-board from €180. In Styrie, the Höflehner Naturresort is also focusing on an adults-only spa; further afield, see Le Primore in Hévíz, on the shores of the Hungarian thermal lake, or hotel eriro, named Hotel of the Year 2027 in Austria.
