Five centuries of hospitality

Since 1528, the courtyard has housed an inn, “Zum Rappen”, the black raven. For over three centuries, it welcomed the Duke of Bavaria (1570), Swedish general Gustav Horn (1632), Marshal Turenne (1647), and, incognito, Emperor Joseph II. The hotel closed in 1854; a glassworks operated there for nearly 130 years, after which the premises, classified as a historic monument in 1930, were left abandoned. Restored from 2007 to 2009, Cour du Corbeau reopened as a hotel on May 1st, 2009, joining Accor’s MGallery collection.

Carved wooden balustrades and galleries, half-timbering, capitals: the cobbled courtyard, tucked behind Rue des Couples by the Ill river, is the heart of the hotel and its crowning achievement. Just minutes from the cathedral, the city is barely heard here, a rare luxury during the Christmas market season.

The 63 rooms are all unique, featuring wood, stone, stained glass, and sloping ceilings: Classic (23 sqm), Deluxe (32 sqm, overlooking the courtyard or a private garden), Prestige (37 sqm, Nespresso machine and double washbasin). Individual air conditioning, international press, and a minibar complete the amenities. The Deluxe rooms overlooking the private garden are our favorites, a rare find right in the city center.

While there is no restaurant, the hotel curates its culinary moments: a continental breakfast featuring local produce from 6:45 am to 11:00 am (until noon on weekends), served in the dining room, in-room, or in the courtyard when weather permits; regional pastry afternoon tea in the former stables; and a wood-and-leather cocktail bar open until 11:30 pm on weekdays and midnight on weekends. Room service is available around the clock.

Why 9.2 out of 10

Cour du Corbeau earns our highest score for its setting: no other hotel in Strasbourg lets you sleep inside a 1528 landmark. The absence of a restaurant, spa, and parking is a drawback, but the peacefulness of the courtyard and proximity to the cathedral more than compensate. This is our charm address in our selection of hotels for Strasbourg’s Christmas market.
