The Tropical Hotel in Manaus delays its Tribute Portfolio rebirth to 2027: 308 rooms on the Rio Negro

The Tropical Hotel in Manaus, a legendary hotel on the banks of the Rio Negro closed since 2019, will not reopen under Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio brand until the first half of 2027. Announced in August 2024 with a gradual opening from late 2024, then postponed to 2026, the project has slipped once again. This will be Brazil’s first Tribute Portfolio property, featuring 308 rooms, including 26 suites.

An Amazonian giant closed since 2019

Opened in March 1976 in a colonial style, the Tropical was the iconic hotel of Manaus, still boasting 611 rooms when it closed. It shut its doors in 2019 following the bankruptcy of its historical owner, the Varig group. The Fametro group, a higher education player in Manaus, acquired it at a judicial auction in November 2020 for 91 million reais before partnering with Marriott.

Our perspective

Manaus remains the gateway to the Brazilian Amazon, yet its luxury offering is sparse. The return of the Tropical under an international brand could change the game, provided the timeline finally holds: the project has already been postponed twice since the 2024 announcement.
