Amanvari, Aman’s first resort in Mexico, is worth it for couples who want the Sea of Cortez, a private pool and total quiet, and can live with a bill of at least $4,773 a night. Open since 1 August 2026 on the East Cape of Baja California Sur, under an hour from Los Cabos airport, it has just 18 casitas. On 15 October 2026, the cheapest casita for two on the night of 3 November 2026 cost $5,432, taxes and fees included. Our verdict: exceptional for stillness and the sea, not for nightlife or a tight budget.

- Our verdict · Exceptional for anyone seeking the Sea of Cortez and utter stillness. Questionable for those looking for the lively scene in Los Cabos, an hour’s drive away.
It took Aman six years longer than planned to open in Mexico. Amanvari finally welcomed its first guests on 1 August 2026, not in Los Cabos where one might have expected the brand, but an hour’s drive away on the East Cape, a stretch of coastline untouched by mass tourism. The name blends two Sanskrit words: aman, peace, and vari, water.
With the cheapest casita at $5,432 on an ordinary Tuesday in November, the question is not whether it is beautiful. The question is what this price actually buys, and who it is truly designed for. Here is what our examination of the property reveals.
Where Amanvari is located, exactly
The resort occupies the East Cape of Baja California Sur, the eastern shore of the peninsula overlooking the Sea of Cortez · which Jacques Cousteau called the world’s aquarium, home to one of the richest marine ecosystems on the planet. Behind lie the Sierra de la Laguna mountains. Ahead, coral reefs and underwater canyons.
It is not Los Cabos, and that is precisely the point. The resort sits under an hour from the airport, yet miles away from the thousand-room mega-resorts that made the reputation, and caused the saturation, of the peninsula’s southern tip.
Amanvari is part of Costa Palmas, a private estate of about 600 hectares (1,500 acres), which it shares with a larger neighbour, the Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas. The estate has 7 hectares (18 acres) of organic orchards and farms, a marina, a golf club and above all five kilometres (three miles) of genuinely swimmable coastline. This last detail deserves emphasis: along much of this coastline, strong currents and heavy undertows make swimming impossible. A shoreline where you can safely enter the ocean is a rare luxury here, and arguably the most undervalued asset of the entire project.
The casitas: 18 keys, four categories

Eighteen. That single figure dictates everything else. At this scale, a resort operates not like a hotel, but like a private residence: the team knows your name within forty-eight hours, and there are no queues for anything. It is also what mechanically explains the rate: the heavy fixed costs of such an estate are shared across eighteen keys rather than two hundred.
The booking engine lists four categories, all the same size: 82 square metres (883 sq ft). The Casita, raised among the palms with estuary views, is the entry level. The Estuary Casita opens at ground level onto the lagoon. The Horizon Casita is raised for a panoramic view of the Sea of Cortez and the Sierra de la Laguna. The Beachfront Casita has direct access to the sand. Every one has a heated private pool of 10 by 1.5 metres, a terrace with a fireplace, a king-size bed, a soaking tub and indoor and outdoor showers. What you pay for between categories is the view and the address, not more space.
The architecture is an original design by Heah & Co., realised by Elastic Architects: hand-applied white concrete, stone, wood, and plaster. The colour palette echoes the sandy tones of the surrounding landscape. It is restrained, understated, and unmistakably Aman · stylistically closer to Amangiri in Utah than to the Asian Aman properties, sharing the same ambition to blend seamlessly into the scenery.
Amanvari rates 2026
On 15 October 2026, we searched Aman’s official booking engine for one night, Tuesday 3 to Wednesday 4 November 2026, for two adults. Prices are per casita and per night, taxes and fees included, on the Standard Daily Rate with breakfast.
- 🌴 Casita · $5,432
- 🌿 Estuary Casita · $7,219
- 🌅 Horizon Casita · $7,906
- 🏖️ Beachfront Casita · not available for sale online that night (on request from the reservations team)
The booking calendar shows the lowest price available for each night, and it moves a lot. Across the months we checked on 15 October 2026, again for two adults with taxes included:
- November 2026 · $5,432 to $5,515 on most weeknights, $6,380 to $7,301 at weekends, up to $9,660 over Thanksgiving
- December 2026 · the cheapest nights we found, $4,773 on Monday 21 December and $4,814 on Saturday 12 December, then $9,280 to $16,069 between 22 and 31 December
- January 2027 · $6,600 to $10,928
- February 2027 · $5,913 to $6,724
- April and May 2027 · from $4,869 on several Tuesdays in April, $5,803 to $7,562 in May
- August and September 2027 · $5,762 to $6,463
Every stay includes daily breakfast, in-room refreshments and non-alcoholic drinks, non-motorised water sports equipment, bikes, a daily guided wellness activity, the fitness centre, the yoga pavilion and itinerary planning. The heated private pool comes with every casita: an Aman standard, not an upgrade. So do the Costa Palmas estate, its organic farms and five kilometres of beach, and a staff-to-guest ratio that is the single largest expense and invisible on a brochure.
What remains an extra charge, as with all Aman properties: lunch, dinner and drinks, spa treatments, and the excursions the resort arranges, such as diving, snorkelling trips, sailing, horse riding and golf, as well as helicopter transfers. A $5,432 night does not mean a final bill of $5,432. It is a detail price comparison websites consistently overlook, and one that significantly alters the total budget of a week-long stay.
How to get there
The gateway is Los Cabos International Airport in San José del Cabo (SJD), served by direct flights from many cities in the United States and Canada. From there, Aman gives 45 to 60 minutes by car to the resort along the coast, or about 15 minutes by helicopter. Private jets can land at PrimeSky, a private terminal with its own FBO services.
From Europe, most itineraries involve a connection in North America or Mexico City. Arrange the transfer with the resort when you book, so that a driver or the helicopter is waiting on arrival. For guests who want to explore, Cabo Pulmo National Park, one of the few living coral reefs in the Sea of Cortez, lies about half an hour south by road, part of it unpaved.
Best time to visit Amanvari
The most comfortable window runs from November to May: dry, sunny, warm days and cool evenings. From December to April, humpback whales winter in the waters off the Cape, which is the strongest reason to come in that season. Winter also brings the north wind that sweeps the East Cape: good news for kitesurfers, less so if you want a glassy sea for snorkelling every morning.
Summer is hot and humid, and the eastern Pacific hurricane season officially runs from 15 May to 30 November, with the highest risk in September and October. The calendar reflects this only in part: the cheapest dates we found were in early December and in April, while Christmas, New Year and Thanksgiving push prices to two or three times the usual rate. Our pick: a midweek stay in late April or early December, for good weather at the lowest prices of the year.
The spa, the temazcal and the Hydro Houses
The wellness centre features six private treatment rooms, two Hydro Houses equipped with a banya and hammam, a 24-hour fitness centre, and a contemporary temazcal.
The latter deserves special mention, as it is the key element anchoring the resort in its heritage. The temazcal is an ancient Mesoamerican ritual steam bath, practised long before the Spanish conquest: a low-domed lodge, heated volcanic stones, medicinal herbs, and a four-phase ceremony. Aman offers a refined, contemporary interpretation.
It is the distinction between a generic international hotel spa transplanted to Mexico and a wellness space that tells a story about its place. On this point, Amanvari delivers · much like the ryokan KAI Kaga we reviewed in Japan, which carries the same philosophy even further with its onsen and kintsugi workshops.
Four restaurants and a beach club
Four distinct venues, plus a beach club, for only eighteen casitas, an impressive ratio:
- Sesui · the Japanese restaurant, a signature concept across the brand
- Arva · the Italian table, featured at several Aman properties worldwide
- Luma · open-flame cooking inspired by Baja California’s coastal traditions
- The Lounge · cocktails and casual dining, the social hub of the resort
Sesui and Arva are proprietary concepts replicated across the portfolio: you know exactly what to expect, quality is consistent, but surprise is minimal. Luma is the only genuinely local venue, and the one upon which the property’s culinary reputation will ultimately depend. Baja California offers exceptional produce: fresh catch from the Sea of Cortez, wines from the Guadalupe Valley, and produce from the estate’s 7 hectares of organic farms just minutes away.
Six years late: what it reveals about the project
Amanvari was announced in 2018 for an opening in 2020, with 20 sea-facing pavilions drawn by Heah & Co. It finally opened on 1 August 2026, with 18 casitas. A six-year delay for an eighteen-key property.
This should be stated clearly, because it is significant, but it must also be interpreted properly. A delay of this scale on a boutique resort is not merely the result of the pandemic: it reflects a challenging build site, strict environmental regulations · construction took place at the edge of an estuary in a protected ecosystem · and an uncompromising standard of execution that took precedence over schedules.
For future guests, this is more reassuring than concerning. Rushed luxury openings invariably suffer from the same teething issues: six months of chaos, untrained staff, and malfunctioning facilities. A project that took six additional years to complete arrives, in principle, fully resolved. The coming seasons will reveal whether that holds true.
Amanvari review: our verdict
Amanvari is for you if you are travelling solely for the Sea of Cortez and peace of mind. If diving the reefs of the Sea of Cortez in the morning and a quiet beach with a private pool in the afternoon feel worth $5,000 to $8,000 a night. If you are already fond of Amangiri or Amanyara and appreciate the same aesthetic transferred to the Mexican desert. If you travel as a couple, or with close family, and utter silence is what you are buying.
Look elsewhere if you are hoping for the energy of Los Cabos, its nightlife and bustling restaurant scene: you are an hour away, and that distance is by design, not by accident. If you travel with teenagers who need constant entertainment, eighteen casitas and an agricultural estate will quickly fall short. And if your budget requires strict tracking, remember that Aman extras can easily match the room rate: in that case, an address with fewer hidden costs will provide greater peace of mind.
One final, honest note: this resort opened in August 2026 and has yet to complete its first high season. Everything above describes a master plan, an architectural concept and a brand promise, not yet a seasoned retreat. Service, gastronomy, and maintenance at an Aman are judged over time, and we will update this review as the first full seasons deliver their verdict.
