A 1552 mansion
Behind a large sandstone arch and a heavy wooden door at 1 rue du Bouclier lies a mansion rebuilt in 1552. In 1570, it belonged to Ulrich de Turckheim, whose coat of arms appears on the 16th-century fresco uncovered during restoration and visible in the bar. Vosges sandstone spiral staircase, Zuber room lined with 18th-century canvases: every room tells the story of the house.
The rooms
The rooms explore two styles: traditional Alsatian, with painted furniture and beams, or bourgeois, with Renaissance wardrobes and crystal chandeliers. They range from Comfort (13 to 16 m²) to Deluxe (21 to 32 m²) and Prestige (32 to 39 m²), featuring inlaid parquet floors, natural stone bathrooms and underfloor heating. Views look out onto the courtyard or rooftops rather than the Ill river, and some rooms are accessible only by stairs. Our advice: aim for at least a Deluxe room.
The suites
The Junior Suites (34 to 39 m²) are nestled beneath the beams; the Superior Suites (45 to 60 m², duplex or single-level) accommodate four to five guests, with two bathrooms and a balneotherapy bathtub.
L’Écrin du Bien-Être, beneath the vaults
Guests descend via the historic sandstone staircase: 150 m² beneath ancient stone vaults, featuring a hammam, Klafs sauna, massage shower and Briare enamel whirlpool bath. There is no swimming pool or fitness room. Access costs €15 per hour or €25 for two hours for hotel guests, and one hour is complimentary with any Enatae treatment of 50 minutes or more. Le Spitze, Le Meyerhof and breakfast
Breakfast, an unlimited regional buffet featuring kougelhopfs and pretzels, is served from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM in the Zuber room or in the flower-filled courtyard in fine weather. Le Spitze restaurant, meaning “lace” in Alsatian, offers modern Alsatian cuisine by chefs Victor Eberhardt and Yannick Mattern. Featuring red velvet and a pewter counter, the Le Meyerhof lounge bar opens onto the courtyard, right beneath the fresco.
Why 9.2 out of 10
Le Bouclier d’Or achieves what few hotels of this size manage: a proper spa, fine dining and historic decor within the intimate setting of a mansion. The smallest rooms are compact, some lack elevator access, and none overlook the Ill river. Just a few minutes’ walk from Place Kléber, it features in our selection of hotels for the Strasbourg Christmas market.
