On Plaza Nueva, the building that housed the Telefónica telephone exchange since 1928 is set to become a 42-room hotel. Marriott is opening its third Tribute Portfolio address in Seville here, under a name that reflects the building’s origins: Confidencia.
A 1928 telephone exchange, built for the Ibero-American Exposition
The building emerged just ahead of the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, a time when Seville embraced a monumental architecture that still defines its skyline. Telefónica established its exchange here: for decades, the city’s conversations passed through this building before travelling out to the rest of the world.
Its neo-baroque façade is protected. Consequently, the conversion has been carried out under the constraints of a monument: the exterior shell remains untouched while the interior is completely reimagined. It is the same approach taken in Málaga with the former newspaper headquarters, and it explains the announced room count of 42, which is far lower than what a newly constructed building of this size would offer.
The name stems from the building, not a branding exercise
“Confidencia” refers to what once passed through these walls: calls, news, secrets. Naming a hotel after the building’s former use rather than a brand or neighbourhood has become a hallmark of the boutique segment, and Tribute Portfolio has made this its rule: each address retains its own distinct name and identity while the parent group remains in the background.
This philosophy is evident in the scale: 42 keys, no grand lobby, and a hotel designed as a tranquil retreat amid a bustling square.
Forty-two keys, a rooftop pool and views of the Giralda
The 42 rooms and suites occupy the upper floors behind the preserved façade. On the roof, an outdoor swimming pool and the La Azotea bar look out towards the Giralda. On the ground floor, the La Sobremesa restaurant takes its name from the quintessential Spanish tradition of lingering around the table long after the meal has ended.
These two venues will play a role that extends beyond the hotel itself: in Seville, a rooftop with cathedral views functions just as much as a destination for locals as it does a guest amenity.

Marriott densifies its presence in Seville rather than expanding elsewhere
The group already operates five addresses in the city: two AC Hotels, a Luxury Collection property with the Hotel Alfonso XIII, and two Tribute Portfolio hotels, Los Seises Sevilla and Querencia de Sevilla. Confidencia will be the brand’s third location in the city.
This concentration speaks volumes about the Andalusian market: rather than opening a single address in each regional capital, the group is multiplying its brands in a city where high-end demand has become year-round rather than restricted to the spring season.
