World Cup 2026 in Mexico: Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, Where to Stay for the Matches

Mexico is the historic cradle of the 2026 World Cup: it was at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca that the tournament opened on 11 June, on the pitch that has already hosted two World Cup finals, in 1970 and 1986. Three Mexican cities are hosting matches: Mexico City, a refined capital · Guadalajara, the pearl of Jalisco and the tequila capital · Monterrey, a business metropolis at the foot of the mountains, and one of the tournament’s most affordable stops. Here’s a city-by-city overview to help you choose your Mexican base camp.

The Essentials
Mexico is hosting three host cities. In Mexico City, the luxury hotels are concentrated in Polanco and along Paseo de la Reforma, a fair distance from Estadio Azteca in the south of the city. In Guadalajara, the modern Andares district and the city centre gather the best addresses, with Estadio Akron located in Zapopan. In Monterrey, the most accessible of the three at around 144 euros per night, hotels are found in San Pedro Garza García, with Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe. Book early for Mexico City, more comfortably elsewhere.

Mexico City, the Capital and Estadio Azteca

An elevated megacity with a flourishing culture, Mexico City concentrates its finest addresses in the chic Polanco district and along Paseo de la Reforma, near Chapultepec Park. Estadio Azteca, on the other hand, stands in the south of the city, in the Coyoacán district, a fair distance from the prestigious hotels. It is best to anticipate the journey: the metro serves the stadium, but on a match night in a city of this size, patience is key.

Its central and leafy location places it near Chapultepec Park and the main routes towards the south of the city. An elegant and peaceful address from which to explore Mexico City.

Housed in a César Pelli-designed tower on Paseo de la Reforma, The St. Regis Mexico City offers spectacular views of the avenue and the Angel of Independence. The in-house butler service, Remède Spa, and Diana restaurant create a contemporary grand hotel experience. Its position on the Reforma ideally connects it to Polanco and the beating heart of the capital. The choice for vertical and luminous luxury, prized for its urban panoramas.

Guadalajara and Estadio Akron

The capital of Jalisco, cradle of mariachi and tequila, Guadalajara blends colonial heritage with modern business districts. Its best addresses are spread between the historic centre and the contemporary Andares district, in Zapopan. It is precisely in Zapopan, on the north-western outskirts of the conurbation, that Estadio Akron, home of the Chivas club, is located. Staying in the Andares area brings you closer to the stadium and concentrates the city’s modern nightlife.

In the heart of the modern Andares district in Zapopan, the Hyatt Regency Andares Guadalajara is integrated into a complex combining luxury boutiques, restaurants, and offices. Its contemporary rooms, swimming pool, and its location closest to the city’s most upscale shopping centre make it a practical and lively base. This is the best-placed address for reaching Estadio Akron, also located in Zapopan. Ideal for those who want to combine modern comfort and proximity to the stadium.

Monterrey and Estadio BBVA

An industrial and financial metropolis in the north, Monterrey unfolds at the foot of the spectacular Cerro de la Silla, its emblematic mountain. High-standard living is concentrated in San Pedro Garza García, a neighbouring municipality reputed to be the wealthiest in the country. Estadio BBVA, nicknamed El Gigante de Acero (The Steel Giant), is located in Guadalupe, to the east of the conurbation, with the silhouette of the mountain as a backdrop. With rates around 144 euros per night, Monterrey is the most accessible Mexican stop.

Also in San Pedro Garza García, Live Aqua Monterrey offers contemporary and sensorial luxury, prized for its refined design and spa. Its modern rooms and hushed atmosphere appeal to travellers seeking a stylish interlude in the northern metropolis. Its location in the upscale district of San Pedro combines residential calm with convenient access to the routes leading to Guadalupe and Estadio BBVA. An elegant alternative to more classic styles.

When to Book and What Budget

The three Mexican cities do not exert the same pressure on prices. Mexico City, the capital and venue for the opening match, concentrates demand: its luxury hotels in Polanco and Reforma are booked early and display the highest rates of the trio. Guadalajara remains more moderate, while Monterrey, at around 144 euros per night, stands out as the most wallet-friendly Mexican stop. Everywhere, aiming to arrive outside of match dates helps to reduce the bill. Mexico also offers significantly better value for money than the American host cities, making it a prime choice for upgrading without excessive expense.

From the cauldron of the Azteca to the stands of El Gigante de Acero, and through the fervour of Jalisco, Mexico brings an unparalleled footballing intensity to this World Cup. Three cities, three atmospheres · and luxury hotels that, from Mexico City’s colonial patio to Monterrey’s design suites, remind us that Mexican hospitality is as much to be savoured as the spectacle of the stadiums.
