Inspired by the Château d’Amboise and opened in 1929 overlooking Sunset Boulevard, Chateau Marmont is Los Angeles’s most legendary hotel: 63 rooms, suites, cottages and bungalows, a courtyard garden restaurant and a century-old connection to Hollywood. A Loire Valley château on Sunset Boulevard

Designed by architects Arnold A. Weitzman and William Douglas Lee based on the silhouette of the Château d’Amboise, the building opened on 1 February 1929 as an apartment complex, before being transformed into a hotel in 1931 by Albert E. Smith, co-founder of Vitagraph Studios. Its seven floors weathered the earthquakes from 1933 to 1994 without major damage. Spanish-style cottages and a swimming pool were added in the 1930s, followed by bungalows designed in 1956 by architect Craig Ellwood.

Designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1976, the hotel has been owned since 1990 by hotelier André Balazs, who also owns The Mercer in New York. In July 2020, he announced its transformation into a private members-only club; the project was abandoned in August 2022, and the hotel remains open to everyone.

Suites, cottages and bungalows

The hotel features around sixty accommodations decorated in Hollywood Golden Age style. On 27 September 2026, the official calendar displayed starting rates from $740 to $1,245 per night for two adults in November and December, depending on dates; exact pricing per category is provided at the time of booking.

The mid-century hillside bungalows, designed by Craig Ellwood, are the hotel’s largest accommodations, while the Arts & Crafts cottages surround a landscaped courtyard near the pool, set among banana trees. Many of the suites in the main building feature fully equipped kitchens.

The courtyard garden restaurant

The restaurant serves seasonal Californian cuisine in the lobby, in the courtyard garden and under the terrace’s Gothic arcades. It accepts non-residents with a reservation, with cancellations allowed up to 24 hours in advance. The neighbouring Bar Marmont, on Sunset Boulevard, closed in 2017.

A hotel of cinema and literature

Writer Eve Babitz evokes it in her 1970s books, and Martin Amis features it under another name in Money. Sofia Coppola filmed Somewhere there in 2010, the hotel appears in La La Land, and the album Room 29 by Jarvis Cocker and Chilly Gonzales, released in 2017, is dedicated to it.

Rules to know before booking

Guests must be at least 21 years old to book, presenting a payment card and matching ID. Check-in is from 4 pm, check-out before 11 am. Photos, filming, live streaming and influencer content are prohibited without written consent.
