Puerto Williams et le canal Beagle, où ouvrira The Cormorant at 55 South

The Cormorant at 55 South: The world’s southernmost hotel to open in Chile

  • The Cormorant at 55 South will become the world’s southernmost hotel in October 2026, in Puerto Williams, Chile.
  • 150 rooms facing the forest or the Beagle Channel, in a sub-Antarctic zone.
  • The property is being developed by luxury cruise line Silversea.
  • Its name pays tribute to the cormorant, a lucky charm bird for sailors in the language of the Yahgan people.

There is a spot on the map beyond which almost nothing remains: Puerto Williams, the southernmost town on the planet, facing the Beagle Channel. It is here that The Cormorant at 55 South will open in October 2026, becoming the world’s southernmost hotel.

A hotel on the 55th parallel south

The name says it all. “55 South” refers to the latitude of the location, 55 degrees south of the equator, right in the sub-Antarctic zone of Chilean Patagonia. At this latitude, the landscape shifts: southern forests, snow-capped peaks and the cold waters of the Beagle Channel, a historic passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The property will feature 150 rooms, facing either the forest or the channel.

A name borrowed from the Yahgan people

The choice of name is no coincidence. “Cormorant” echoes Lakutaia, the Yahgan word for the cormorant, a bird considered a lucky charm for those braving rough waters. A nod to the indigenous people of Tierra del Fuego, of whom Puerto Williams remains one of the last homes, and a way to anchor the property in its territory rather than imposing an international standard.

Fireplaces and Chilean flavours

The communal areas play the role of a cosy sanctuary. The Fireplace Lounge offers a muted retreat looking out over the Patagonian landscape, with a menu of Chilean wines and signature cocktails, while the Latitude 55 restaurant highlights the country’s flavours and traditions. At these latitudes, the warmth of an interior becomes an essential element of hospitality.

The gateway to Antarctica

Behind the superlative lies an industry logic. The hotel is being developed by luxury cruise line Silversea to accommodate travellers on its Antarctica Bridge programme, who reach Puerto Williams on direct flights from Santiago before embarking for the White Continent. The property thus becomes the gateway for rapidly growing polar tourism, where hospitality extends the cruise experience.

The end of the world as a destination

This project illustrates a shift in luxury travel. Exclusivity is no longer measured solely by the refinement of a hotel, but by its geographical inaccessibility. Going where almost no one goes, at 55 degrees south, becomes the value proposition itself. It is a concept also seen in remote lodges and off-grid retreats, where the rarity of the location takes precedence over an abundance of amenities.
