The Cormorant at 55 South, l'hôtel le plus austral du monde, à Puerto Williams au Chili

The Cormorant at 55 South: The world’s southernmost hotel to open in Chile

  • In October 2026, The Cormorant at 55 South will become the southernmost hotel on Earth, in Puerto Williams, Chile.
  • 150 rooms facing the subantarctic forest or the Beagle Channel, with king beds convertible into twins.
  • Developed by luxury cruise line Silversea: from 2026, Antarctica Fly Cruise guests will begin their expedition here.
  • At Latitude 55, the table celebrates the flavours of Tierra del Fuego; in the hall, a monumental cormorant by Chilean sculptor Paola Vezzani.

There is a point on the map beyond which there is almost nothing left: Puerto Williams, the southernmost city on the planet, facing the Beagle Channel. This is where The Cormorant at 55 South will open in October 2026, becoming the southernmost hotel in the world.

A hotel on the 55th parallel south

The name says it all. The “55 South” refers to the latitude of the place, 55 degrees south of the equator, deep in the subantarctic zone of Chilean Patagonia. At this latitude the landscape shifts: austral forests, the peaks of the Dientes de Navarino and the cold waters of the Beagle Channel, the historic passage between the Atlantic and the Pacific. Days fill up with hikes, nature walks and kayak outings, in a silence broken only by the calls of rare wildlife.

A name borrowed from the Yahgan people

The choice of name is no accident. “Cormorant” echoes Lakutaia, the Yahgan word for the cormorant, a bird considered a good-luck charm for those who brave rough waters. The tribute continues in the hall: a monumental copper-toned cormorant spreads its wings there, the work of Chilean sculptor Paola Vezzani, born in Punta Arenas, whose art explores the southern landscapes. A way of rooting the address in its territory rather than imposing an international standard upon it.

150 rooms facing the forest or the channel

The rooms play the contemporary refuge card. The 150 rooms open either onto the subantarctic forest or onto the waters of the Beagle Channel, with a king bed convertible into twins depending on the journey’s configuration. Pale woods, clean lines and end-of-the-world light: everything is designed to recharge before, or after, the most demanding of adventures.

Fire as heritage, Tierra del Fuego on the table

The common areas tell the story of the region. The Fireplace Lounge draws on the place of fire in local culture, a symbol of gathering, hospitality and shared storytelling: guests meet around the hearth, between readings and conversations, facing the Patagonian landscape. At Latitude 55, named after the parallel, the menu celebrates the bounty of Tierra del Fuego, from locally inspired bites to family-style dinners.

The gateway to Antarctica

Behind the superlative lies an expedition logic. The hotel is developed by Silversea to welcome, from 2026, the travellers of its Antarctica Fly Cruises, who reach Puerto Williams by direct flight from Santiago before embarking for the white continent. Expert-led hikes and dinners that tell the story of the region: the stay sets the tone for the expedition to come, with the line’s signature service at every step.

The end of the world as a destination

This project illustrates a shift in luxury travel. Exclusivity is no longer measured only by the refinement of an address, but by its geographic inaccessibility. Going where almost no one goes, at 55 degrees south, becomes the value proposition in itself. A logic found in isolated lodges and off-grid addresses, where the rarity of the place outweighs the abundance of services.
