Last updated:

Open by invitation since August 2026, the REM tower at City of Dreams, Macau, now has its official launch, announced by Melco in October, after Golden Week. Its 149 keys, most of them suites, go all in on audacity: deep red, shimmering metals and a motto that says it all, “Shake You Awake”.

The name does not promise a well-behaved night. REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement, the phase of sleep when the brain is most active and dreams feel most real. Melco draws from it an aesthetic it calls bold and “high-energy”, designed for travellers seeking intense experiences, style and discretion.

In the rooms, deep red mingles with shimmering metals, beneath plays of light and shadow that shift with the hour. The resort is also home to Morpheus, the hotel designed by Zaha Hadid Architects that features among the most beautiful design hotels in the world, Nüwa and a Grand Hyatt.

A billion patacas for the former Hard Rock tower

REM occupies the tower that once housed the Hard Rock Hotel, later renamed The Countdown and closed since 2021. Where the former hotel had some 330 rooms, the new address keeps just 149, making way for far larger suites.

Melco’s management puts the investment at around 125 million dollars, or one billion patacas. The first guests have been received by invitation since August 2026; as of 20 October, the hotel still cannot be booked online and no rates have been published.

At the top of the tower, The Lair is reached by a private lift. Inside are a crystal basketball hoop, a DJ booth, a sculpted metal bar and a rotating crimson velvet bed. A private spa with an infrared sauna leads to the centrepiece: a transparent cantilevered pool, suspended above the Cotai Strip, Macau’s avenue of grand casinos.

The gym is the first in Macau equipped with Life Fitness Symbio, the brand’s flagship range, with coaches who build tailor-made programmes.

Our take: a bet on audacity

REM takes the opposite tack to hushed luxury. A crystal basketball hoop and a DJ booth in a suite promise a private party rather than a retreat, and Melco owns it, right down to its motto. One major unknown remains for travellers: as long as the hotel cannot be booked online and its rates stay confidential, REM is aimed first and foremost at the group’s invited guests.
