Robert De Niro has never put his name above a door. And yet the actor heads, with two partners, a luxury hotel brand present on four continents: 20 Nobu hotels open and 28 projects signed, from Barbuda to Saigon, plus one address he owns outright, The Greenwich Hotel in Tribeca. Here is how a dinner in Los Angeles in 1988 became an empire, hotel by hotel, with the dates, the sizes and the upcoming openings taken from the official websites.
From a TriBeCa table to the first hotel
The Nobu story begins with persistence. De Niro waited five years for chef Nobu Matsuhisa to agree to open a restaurant with him in New York : first suggested in 1989, the project came to life in September 1994 in TriBeCa, the neighbourhood where the actor had already set up his production company and the Tribeca Grill. It would then take almost twenty years to go from the table to the bedroom.
The move into hotels rests on a simple idea, which the brand sums up itself: extend the dining experience into the night. Each hotel is built around a Nobu restaurant, with the same cuisine, the same Japanese minimalism and an in-room dining service run by the kitchen brigade. The brand now counts more than fifty restaurants, many of them outside its hotels.
Who owns Nobu Hospitality?
Nobu Hospitality’s shareholders include its three founders, chef Nobu Matsuhisa, Robert De Niro and Meir Teper, a film producer and investor. In 2015 Crown Resorts, the casino group of Australian billionaire James Packer, bought 20% of the company for $100 million; since July 2024 that stake has belonged to a Blackstone portfolio company, Blackstone having acquired Crown in 2022. The brand is run by Trevor Horwell, chief executive, and Struan McKenzie, chief operating officer.
Nobu Hospitality does not build its hotels. It brings the brand, the concept and the cuisine to owners who finance and own the buildings: Caesars Entertainment hosts three Nobu Hotels in its casinos in Las Vegas, Atlantic City and New Orleans; Simon built the Atlanta hotel into its Phipps Plaza centre; in Rome, the Via Veneto palazzo belongs to a fund managed by Castello SGR. This asset-light model explains the pace of expansion: in 2024 the chief executive was aiming for “80 hotels within the next five years”. Branded residences are the other growth engine, with 660 homes in Toronto and 50 in Punta Cana.

Before Nobu Hotels, there was a more personal address. De Niro opened his own hotel in 2008, five years before the first Nobu Hotel, a few streets from where it all began.

The 20 Nobu hotels open today
On 24 September 2026, the brand’s official website takes bookings for 20 hotels. The United States has eight of them, Spain five, and the rest of the portfolio is spread across Mexico, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, Morocco and the Philippines. Sizes range from 16 rooms in Malibu to 321 in Manila.

28 hotels in the pipeline, Barbuda to Saigon
The list of announced openings is now longer than the list of open hotels. Of the 28 projects listed by the brand, seven are in the Middle East and Africa, three of them in Egypt, and ten in Europe. Almost all combine a hotel, a restaurant and residences sold under the Nobu name. The most anticipated is also the most symbolic: a Nobu Hotel in New York, the city of the first restaurant, which has never had one.

What holds the De Niro empire together
Four reasons the brand lasts
- Food first · every hotel opens around a Nobu restaurant, which draws a local crowd before the travellers arrive and keeps the address busy all year.
- The star behind the scenes · De Niro lends his name to no hotel. He turns up at openings, as in Rome in November 2025, and leaves the brand to the chef.
- Other people’s buildings · Caesars casinos, Simon shopping centres, property funds: Nobu signs contracts and leaves the capital to the owners, which lets it open quickly.
- Deliberate exits · Shoreditch, the first Nobu Hotel in Europe, left the brand in 2026 and reopened as an Aethos hotel. The portfolio renews itself rather than simply piling up.
The model has set an example. Other celebrities have since moved into hotels, from footballer Cristiano Ronaldo with Pestana to Lionel Messi with MiM, and Pharrell Williams in Paris. None has yet come close to the scale De Niro and his partners have built in thirty years. Miami Beach has 206 Nobu rooms within the Eden Roc complex. San Sebastián does not publish its room count.
