Fairmont Chania Resort, Greece’s First Fairmont, Opening in Crete in 2029

On 24 September 2026, Accor signed Greece’s first Fairmont: the Fairmont Chania Resort, a 104-key resort including 40 suites, expected in 2029 on the northwest coast of Crete. The project is developed with the Cretan hotel group Hersonissos Group Hotels, the owner, and designed by architect Luciano Mazza and designer Inge Moore.

Greece’s First Fairmont

Greece previously had no Fairmont hotels. Omer Acar, CEO of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, speaks of an “inaugural entry” for the brand into the country. The resort will be located on the seafront, with direct access to a wide sandy beach and a beach club.

The owner, Hersonissos Group Hotels, is a Cretan family group founded in 1980 by architect Konstantinos Kaloutsakis and his wife Iliana. It already operates seven hotels, including the Abaton Island Resort & Spa in Hersonissos. Its CEO, Georgios Kaloutsakis, says he is “immensely proud” to introduce the brand to Greece.

Chania’s Venetian Heritage as a Central Theme

The architectural approach draws on Chania’s Venetian past, its naval tradition and the work of architect Carlo Scarpa. Artist’s impressions reveal terraced gardens, waterfalls and a vaulted pavilion, followed by stone suites with private pools nestled among olive trees and lavender.

Accor Accelerates in the Mediterranean

Fairmont has 17 hotels in Europe and North Africa, and five projects underway, including Fairmont Monte Carlo (596 keys) and Fairmont Taghazout in Morocco. In Greece, Accor is also expanding with its MGallery collection, which unveiled the Nírema Hotel & Spa in Samos on the same day and is preparing four other addresses, including one in Chania.

According to Xavier Grange, Head of Luxury Brand Development for Accor in Europe and North Africa, Greece remains “a market where Accor is growing with conviction.” No investment figures have been disclosed.
