Club Med finally has its first resort in Southern Africa. The Club Med South Africa Beach & Safari Resort was officially inaugurated on 17 September 2026 in Tinley Manor, on the KwaZulu-Natal coast, two and a half months after the arrival of the first guests. Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille read President Cyril Ramaphosa’s speech, which hailed “the country’s largest hotel investment since Sun City”.

Beach and bush in a single stay

The formula is a first for Club Med: a 411-key beach resort set across 32 hectares of dunes and coastal forest, extended by a safari lodge in a private 18,000-hectare reserve. The typical stay combines five nights facing the Indian Ocean and two nights in a luxury tent, four and a half hours’ drive north, in Big Five territory.

The site is called Tinley Manor, just north of Ballito, 30 minutes from King Shaka International Airport and 45 minutes from Durban. The architecture is designed by South African practice Craft of Architecture, while the interior design draws on Zulu motifs: basketry, geometric textiles, light woods and terracotta.

411 rooms, 66 Ilanga suites

The 310 Superior rooms and 35 Deluxe rooms almost all overlook the sea, with family and connecting options available. At the top of the range, the Ilanga Exclusive Collection space brings together 66 suites, a dedicated pool and a lounge bar, complete with dedicated service, a well-proven recipe for the brand in Punta Cana and Cancún.

Launch rates published in South Africa were 47,198 rands for two, for five nights in a Superior room in July, approximately €2,300, and 38,070 rands at the end of September. From France, Club Med is offering packages starting from €3,315 per person for seven nights, five at the resort and two at the lodge, including Paris-Durban flights.

Four pools, two restaurants, one beach bar

The resort features four pools, including an adults-only zen pool and a family pool. Oceana, the main restaurant, serves buffets overlooking the sea; Nguni, the Gourmet Club, focuses on South African cuisine and local produce, which accounts for 75% of the resort’s food purchasing. The Dunes Beach Bar takes over on the sand.

On the wellness front, the Club Med Spa by Sothys & Terres d’Afrique features ten treatment rooms, a hammam and a yoga palapa facing the ocean. South African cosmetics brand Terres d’Afrique supplies the oils and rituals, including a two-hour-and-forty-minute longevity protocol.

The first Club Med surf school

The Dolphin Coast gave the resort its signature. Club Med is opening the first surf school in its history here, with lessons from age 4, and complements the offering with stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, six padel courts, tennis courts, archery, beach rugby, gravel bike trails and the signature flying trapeze.

The children’s clubs welcome little ones from 4 months to 17 years old, with a surcharge under 4. On the roof, nearly 5,000 m² of solar panels cover a portion of the energy needs and reduce the site’s emissions by around 14%, aiming for Green Star and Green Globe certifications.

Vikela Safari Lodge, the Big Five in luxury tents

The second part of the stay takes place at the Vikela Safari Lodge, open to children from age 4. Its Family and Deluxe tents, set on platforms, open onto a private 18,000-hectare reserve reserved for Club Med guests, home to lions, elephants, buffalos, rhinos and leopards. Two 4×4 game drives per day, at dawn and sunset, are led by rangers.

The lodge features its own family pool, a zen pool, the iNgwe bar, the iNiathy restaurant, and a boma for fireside dinners. It can be booked for one, two or three nights as an extension to the resort, and all of its staff come from neighboring rural communities.

Two billion rands and 600 jobs

The project was financed by a consortium of South African investors as part of the black economic empowerment policy. At over 2 billion rands, this is the largest hotel investment in South Africa and the SADC region since the opening of Sun City in the 1970s. Construction involved 2,300 direct and indirect jobs.

In operation, the resort employs 600 people directly and supports 1,500 indirect jobs among suppliers. “This mega-project is a vote of confidence in South African business, our people’s capabilities and the future of our tourism industry”, wrote Cyril Ramaphosa. The country welcomed 6.5 million international visitors between January and July 2026, up 12.4%.

Our perspective

Club Med had promised South Africa as early as 2023, for July 2026: the date was kept, which is not so frequent for a project of this scale. The real gamble is the format, an all-inclusive beach resort combined with a safari, which no one was operating on this scale. It targets European families just as much as the South African clientele from Johannesburg, an hour’s flight away.

Then there is the question of price. At €3,315 per person including flights, the seven-night stay sits below classic luxury lodges, but well above Mediterranean Club Med resorts. The brand is betting on the novelty factor and on surf, which it is making a central selling point for the first time. If the format proves successful, Tinley Manor will serve as a model for the group’s future openings in the Southern Hemisphere.
