- The Bürgenstock Resort is a palace perched nearly 500 meters above Lake Lucerne, next to Lucerne, Switzerland.
- It recently hosted the negotiations for the agreement between the United States and Iran, in June 2026, two years after the Ukraine peace summit.
- The resort brings together four hotels, a 10,000 m² Alpine Spa with an infinity pool, and a restaurant distinguished by 3 Michelin keys.
- It can be accessed by boat from Lucerne, then by the world’s oldest electric funicular.
Why is everyone talking about Bürgenstock? Because this palace, suspended above Lake Lucerne, has once again entered diplomatic history: it was here that Americans and Iranians met in June 2026 to seal their memorandum of understanding. Here’s everything you need to know about one of Switzerland’s most secret and spectacular addresses.
Why was Bürgenstock chosen for the US-Iran agreement?
The choice of this alpine summit is no coincidence: isolated on its ridge, accessible only by boat and funicular, Bürgenstock can be closed off and secured in a few hours. Switzerland has made it its preferred diplomatic stage. The same resort had already hosted the Ukraine peace summit in June 2024. To receive the delegations, the domain was entirely closed to the public from Wednesday to Sunday, and public transport links to the summit were suspended. As the agreement came into effect forty-eight hours earlier than expected, Switzerland was deprived of the solemn ceremony it was preparing, but the working meetings indeed took place on the heights of the lake.

Where is the Bürgenstock Hotel located?
Bürgenstock overlooks Lake Lucerne from a ridge culminating nearly 500 meters above the water, in the municipality of Obbürgen, in the canton of Nidwalden. The domain covers more than 60 hectares, facing the silhouettes of Pilatus and Rigi. This eagle’s nest position, both close to Lucerne and completely secluded, explains its aura as a refuge from the world.

How to get to Bürgenstock?
The most spectacular way to ascend to Bürgenstock remains by boat from Lucerne, followed by the world’s oldest electric funicular, which climbs from the Kehrsiten pier. Once there, the Hammetschwand lift, Europe’s highest outdoor elevator at 152.8 meters, carries visitors to a 360-degree viewpoint over the lake, Pilatus, and Rigi. The resort can also be reached by road.
One Resort, Four Hotels
Bürgenstock is not just one hotel but a true luxury village bringing together four addresses. The Bürgenstock Hotel & Alpine Spa, a contemporary flagship extended by a historically rich Heritage wing; the Waldhotel by Bürgenstock, focused on health and well-being at the edge of the forest; the Taverne 1879, more intimate and convivial; and the Residence Suites, including the Grand and Panorama Residence Suites designed for long stays and families.
The Alpine Spa and its Infinity Pool
The Alpine Spa’s infinity pool seems to tip into the void, 500 meters above the lake: this is Bürgenstock’s most famous image. The spa spans approximately 10,000 square meters of treatments, saunas, baths, and relaxation areas, making it one of Europe’s largest. The Waldhotel adds a medical and preventive dimension, in a very Swiss approach to well-being.

Bürgenstock Restaurants and Bars
For dining, the resort boasts a dozen restaurants and bars, and holds 3 Michelin keys for the quality of its hospitality. Gourmet cuisine is served at Verbena by Christian Scharrer, while Spices Kitchen & Terrace offers an Asian journey, Oak Grill focuses on grilled dishes facing the pool, and Parisa presents rare Persian cuisine under a dome. The Lakeview Bar & Cigar Lounge completes the offering for late evenings.
Rooms and Suites
From rooms to panoramic suites, most accommodations open onto the lake through large bay windows. Contemporary decor, noble materials, and alpine light set the tone, with a range extending from elegant rooms to vast Residence Suites with multiple bedrooms, ideal for entertaining or long stays.

The resort’s most spacious suites, like the Royal Suite, are favored by official delegations and visiting heads of state. Spacious living rooms, multiple bedrooms, dressing rooms, and panoramic terraces: these high-end apartments offer the privacy and security sought during summits, with the same sweeping view of Lake Lucerne.

Bürgenstock, a Century of Stars
Before heads of state, Bürgenstock was the haunt of stars from cinema’s golden age. Founded in 1873, the estate saw Audrey Hepburn marry Mel Ferrer in its small chapel in 1954, and Sophia Loren live there for several years in a chalet. After nine years of work and half a billion Swiss francs invested, the resort reopened transformed, without losing any of its glamorous history.
