Swiss Diamond Hotel Lugano: the jewel of Ticino unveils its renovation

In the idyllic setting of Lake Lugano, one of Ticino’s most sought-after hotels, the Swiss Diamond Hotel, has recently completed a profound transformation. After five months of intensive closure, the hotel has reopened its doors, revealing to the public a new splendour, the fruit of a major modernisation project. This renovation, the first complete overhaul since its inauguration in 2000, is considered a strategic step by management to sustain and strengthen the positioning of this jewel of Swiss luxury hospitality.

The project encompassed a vast area of the property, covering more than 9,000 square metres. It meticulously transformed all 87 rooms and suites, the entrance hall, reception, the wellness area, and key technical infrastructure. The underlying ambition was clear: to consolidate the hotel’s reputation as a reference resort overlooking Lake Lugano, while adapting its spaces and services to the most demanding contemporary standards of high-end hospitality.

Such an initiative goes far beyond a simple refresh. It embodies the will to create an enriched, harmonious, and profoundly elegant guest experience. It is a commitment to excellence that manifests in every detail, from refined aesthetics to optimised functionality, through absolute comfort, essential for a discerning international clientele.

A strategic transformation at the heart of Ticino

The renovation of the Swiss Diamond Hotel is not limited to a simple aesthetic update; it represents a long-term vision for the property. It aims to meet the evolving expectations of luxury travellers, who today seek a combination of contemporary design, cutting-edge technology, and an authentic connection with the destination. This strategic approach is designed to keep the Swiss Diamond at the forefront of Ticino hospitality, ensuring its relevance and appeal for decades to come.

The scale of the works reflects the Swiss Diamond Hotels group’s ambition to leave nothing to chance. Every element has been rethought to offer a coherent experience, where discreet luxury and impeccable service blend into a serene lakeside setting. It is a promise of renewal for returning guests and a compelling invitation for new visitors seeking a refined escape.

A major investment for the future

The project was colossal, mobilising considerable resources to transform and modernise nearly 9,000 square metres of the hotel. This first complete renovation since its opening in 2000 marks a decisive turning point. It touches the very heart of the guest experience, with all 87 rooms and suites entirely redesigned, but also the communal living areas: from the entrance hall, the first showcase of the property, to the wellness spaces, through the vital technical infrastructure underpinning overall comfort and operation.

The primary objective was to consolidate the Swiss Diamond Hotel’s positioning as a prestigious destination on Lake Lugano. It was not simply about modernising, but about adapting all spaces and services to contemporary high-end hospitality standards, without ever compromising the distinctive character and timeless elegance that have built the hotel’s reputation. This investment signals solid confidence in the future of luxury tourism in Ticino.

Aesthetics and functionality: the experience reimagined

With this project, we wanted to go beyond a simple renovation and create a complete, elegant, and coherent experience.

This statement underlines the will to harmoniously integrate aesthetics, functionality, and comfort within a unique and holistic renovation process. The approach consisted in designing spaces that are not only beautiful to behold, but also intuitive and pleasurable to inhabit.

Every design choice, every material selected, every layout has been conceived to contribute to an atmosphere where guest wellbeing is central. Elegance combines with practicality, allowing guests to feel instantly at ease, surrounded by a discreet and refined luxury. This philosophy is reflected in the fluidity of the spaces, the quality of the finishes, and the attention paid to the smallest details, ensuring total immersion in an exceptional hotel experience.

Rooms and communal spaces elevated

The heart of this vast project undeniably lay in the renovation of the rooms, entirely rethought in terms of furnishings and finishes. The goal was to create cocoons of serenity and luxury, combining contemporary aesthetics with optimal comfort. The corridors, floors, and lifts also benefited from significant modernisation, ensuring a smooth and pleasant transition between different spaces.

The entrance hall, the first point of contact with the property, was entirely reimagined to offer a more harmonious and functional first impression, reflecting the elegance and welcoming atmosphere of the hotel. The emphasis was placed not only on the overall aesthetic but also on the tangible improvement of the guest stay. It is a holistic approach in which every corner contributes to the luxurious and memorable experience that the Swiss Diamond Hotel aims to deliver.

Technical modernisation and sustainability

Alongside the aesthetic improvements, significant modernisation of the technical systems was carried out. Ventilation, heating, and air-conditioning systems were entirely renewed to optimise thermal comfort and the property’s energy efficiency. An upgraded Wi-Fi infrastructure ensures seamless connectivity, indispensable for today’s business and leisure travellers. Fire prevention systems were also brought up to current standards, ensuring maximum safety.

In figures: 150 new sanitary fixtures and 250 recessed spotlights were installed, reflecting the scale of the works. In a drive toward low energy consumption, thirty internal inverter units were deployed for optimised temperature management. One hundred doors were replaced or renovated. The choice of materials is equally striking, with the installation of 350 square metres of Sicilian marble weighing 22 tonnes, which lends a strong and luxurious identity to the interiors, complemented by the painstaking restoration of existing furniture. These combined efforts guarantee not only a refined aesthetic but also state-of-the-art technical and environmental performance.

A wellness hub designed for longer stays

The wellness area, spanning approximately 600 square metres and integrating the Venus wellness centre and the Diamond Spa, holds a central place in the hotel’s new concept. These spaces have been entirely reorganised for optimal functionality, now integrating more harmoniously into the overall offering. The indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, and various relaxation areas have been designed to deliver a coherent experience in line with this new approach, particularly focused on longer stays and the pursuit of a peaceful interlude.

The decision to reinforce the property’s identity as a resort and wellness destination aims to capitalise on its exceptional lakeside location, a distinctive asset. The lush garden overlooking the water and the refined dining spaces also contribute to this vocation, offering an ideal setting for relaxation and escape. The Swiss Diamond Hotel thus positions itself as a holistic destination, where every aspect of the stay is dedicated to the regeneration of body and mind.

An organisational challenge met with distinction

Completing a project of this scale within a tight timeframe represented a considerable organisational challenge. The works took place during the hotel’s closure period, from November 2025 to April 2026. The on-time reopening required meticulous planning and constant coordination between designers, suppliers, and contractors.

According to the lead architect at Mabetex SA in Lugano, the principal challenge was to reconcile substantial technical improvements and a complete reorganisation of the spaces within this tight schedule. All of this had to be achieved while scrupulously preserving the future wellbeing of guests and the intrinsic identity of the property. This success reflects the teams’ capacity to manage complexity while maintaining irreproachable quality standards, ensuring a spectacular renaissance for the Swiss Diamond Hotel. The property, ideally situated in Vico Morcote directly on Lake Lugano, is now ready to enter a phase of consolidation and development, enriched by its 87 renovated rooms and suites, its Lago restaurant, and an expanded wellness offering.
