Vietnam’s northernmost coastline has just gained its first five-star hotel. On the evening of Saturday 19 September 2026, officials from Quang Ninh province cut the ribbon on the Tra Co Long Beach Hotel & Resort, 170 rooms over eleven floors facing the Gulf of Tonkin, in Mong Cai, a city on the Chinese border. The hotel had already been welcoming guests since August; the ceremony closes a project begun fifteen years ago.

Eleven floors facing the Gulf of Tonkin
The building curves across a 21,422 square metre plot, a few steps from Tra Co beach, one of the longest in the country with fifteen kilometres of sand and its rows of casuarina trees. The white facade, lined with continuous balconies on eleven levels, opens most of the rooms towards the sea, while the entry categories look inland, towards the city of Mong Cai and, beyond the border river, the Chinese city of Dongxing.
The resort is the final piece delivered in the Tra Co Long Beach Luxury district, a 20.47 hectare scheme approved in January 2020 that includes 268 residential plots and 66 holiday villas. Its opening completes the transformation of a seafront that long went without upscale accommodation.
170 rooms, from 29 to 206 square metres
The hotel offers five room families, from Classic to Presidential, plus a four-bedroom beachfront villa. Classic Lagoon View rooms start at 29.4 square metres and look towards Mong Cai and Dongxing, a two-country panorama the hotel has made its opening argument. The Deluxe and Premier categories, around 41 square metres, face the sea with a private balcony and a bathtub.
At the top of the list, the Executive Suite Ocean View covers 86 square metres with a separate living room, and the Presidential Room 206 square metres split between two bedrooms, a lounge, a dining room and a jacuzzi room opening onto a wide balcony. Every category shares the same kit: smart television, minibar, safe, desk, bathrobes and round-the-clock room service. Public rates recorded on 20 September 2026 on the hotel’s own website start at 3,300,000 dong a night.

Lang Chai and the BBQ Garden on the sand
Dining comes down to three addresses. Lang Chai Restaurant, on the ground floor, showcases seafood from Tra Co and serves a buffet breakfast, lunch from 11am to 2pm and dinner from 6pm to 8pm. The menu mixes coastal classics, seafood paella and lobster Thermidor, with international cooking handled by a brigade recruited abroad.
The BBQ Garden extends service outdoors for evening grills, and the Long Beach Lounge pours cocktails at sunset. The private beach, the pool, the children’s play area, the spa, the gym and a pickleball court round out the leisure offer, with a shuttle service from the city and the border crossing.
A conference centre for 500 guests
The resort is betting on business travel as much as on holidays. Its conference centre can seat 500 people, a rare format in this part of the country, allowing Mong Cai to compete for seminars, training sessions and gala evenings. The spaces are modular and backed by smaller rooms for meetings and banquets.
The stake is seasonal as much as commercial. Beach tourism on the Gulf of Tonkin is concentrated in summer; corporate guests fill the quiet months. Quang Ninh province sees it as a way to lengthen stays in Tra Co.
Fifteen years of work for Trung Chinh
The project is led by Trung Chinh Joint Stock Company, chaired by Nguyen Khac Trung, who is also chief executive and began the first studies in 2010. The site went through the pandemic, supply shortages and several storm seasons before completion: the Clock Square was started in August 2020 and the first houses handed over in 2022.
In 2023, Trung Chinh partnered with Tra Co Longbeach Hotel Joint Stock Company to develop the five-star hotel and revised the master plan. Thailand’s Dusit came in as technical adviser for that phase, without the property being run under an international brand: the Tra Co Long Beach remains an independent hotel.
Our view
Mong Cai was until now a trading stop for travellers crossing the border, and Tra Co a family beach with no address of standing. A 170-key five-star with a conference centre changes the scale of the game, all the more so now that the expressway puts Hanoi three hours away and Van Don airport forty minutes. Whether international demand follows a destination still geared to the domestic and Chinese markets remains to be seen.
The promise of a view over two countries from your room, though, has no equivalent in Vietnam. We have not yet stayed at the Tra Co Long Beach and will go and judge for ourselves what the Lang Chai kitchen and this first season of service are worth.
