Tucked into the beautiful medieval village of Bormes-les-Mimosas, the Hostellerie du Cigalou carries all the charm of its department, the Var. This southern French hotel appeals to travellers after calm, character and a refined stay under the Mediterranean sun.
Standing in the historic centre of Bormes-les-Mimosas, listed among the most beautiful villages in France, the Hostellerie du Cigalou enjoys a protected setting. The stone building, typically Provencal, blends into the flowered village. A few minutes from the beaches and wild coves of Le Lavandou, the hotel strikes the right balance between sea and hills. Already known for its character and its central position, the address gained fresh momentum when it was bought a year ago by an experienced hotelier.
A renovation led by a hotel professional
Since that change of ownership in 2024, the house has been through several phases of restoration, carried out carefully to keep the soul of the place while adding modern comfort. Work on the rooms, an upgrade of the shared spaces, better services: nothing was left to chance. The aim was to deliver a high-end experience in a genuine setting.
Nestled in the flowered lanes of Bormes-les-Mimosas, the building keeps all of its character: exposed stone and a warm atmosphere. The 20 rooms have been rethought in a chic Provencal style, mixing fine materials with contemporary touches. We stayed in a suite with direct access to a small path leading to the pool. On arrival we were pleasantly surprised by how spotless the room was. Although the hotel stands at a central crossroads in Bormes-les-Mimosas, the soundproofing is excellent: no traffic noise reaches the rooms. We slept deeply, in complete comfort.
A place to unwind, and to work
The pool at the Hostellerie du Cigalou, tucked behind the building, is a real haven. Screened by Mediterranean greenery, it offers an intimate and restful space, perfect for cooling off after a walk through the village or a day on the beach. The setting is as pleasant as it is elegant, and the easy access from the suites is a genuine plus.
Another addition since the recent takeover is a rooftop space next to the pool. Conceived as a spot to rest or to work outdoors, this quiet corner suits reading, working in the shade or simply unwinding after a swim. A modern, well-judged touch that adds to the quiet elegance of the Hostellerie du Cigalou.
A generous breakfast on the terrace
Breakfast, served on the terrace or in the restaurant, is plentiful and good. On the table: fresh pastries, crusty bread, artisan jams, freshly squeezed orange juice, seasonal fruit and a selection of local cheeses and charcuterie. The coffee is good, the service attentive, and the view over the flowered lanes of old Bormes makes the moment better still. It is an excellent way to start the day, whether before a hike in the Massif des Maures or a run to the nearby beaches.
What to do around Bormes-les-Mimosas
Staying at the Hostellerie du Cigalou also means an ideal base for exploring the southern Var. Bormes-les-Mimosas is a perfect starting point for the wild beaches of Le Lavandou, the coastal paths, the Golden Isles of Porquerolles and Port-Cros, and the vineyards of the region.
Plan to come by car or to hire an electric bike, as there is no bus or train on site and taxis and ride-hailing cars are scarce.
During our stay we were invited to the jazz festival in La Londe-les-Maures, better known as La Londe Jazz Festival, held from 31 July to 3 August. It was a highlight of the visit.
Held every summer in an exceptional setting facing the sea, the festival brings together well-known names from the French and international jazz scene. The mood is festive, elegant and friendly at once. Watching a concert at sunset, surrounded by umbrella pines and looking out over the vines or the Mediterranean, is a rare experience we recommend to music lovers, and to anyone after a memorable evening in the south.
