Heatwave in Nice: Air-conditioned hotels with pools to cool off on the French Riviera

In brief
  • When the French Riviera overheats, an air-conditioned room and a pool are essential: here are the Nice addresses to cool off.
  • Our favourite: Hôtel La Pérouse, with its heated pool nestled against the Château hill, facing the sea.
  • For the view: the Splendid Hotel & Spa and its rooftop pool, with a panorama of the entire city.
  • On the Promenade des Anglais: the Hyatt Regency Palais de la Méditerranée and its pool overlooking the Baie des Anges.
  • The smart move in summer: aim for full air conditioning + pool or rooftop, and book early when the heatwave alert is issued.

In summer, Nice has two faces. One of terraces and golden pebbles, and the less glamorous one of burning tarmac when the air no longer circulates. During heatwave peaks, the Baie des Anges can quickly turn into an oven, especially in the streets of the Nice hinterland deprived of sea breeze. The connoisseurs’ solution: an air-conditioned hotel with a pool or rooftop. La Revue des Hôtels has selected the best addresses to escape the heat, from the Promenade to Vieux-Nice.

Hôtel La Pérouse, the secret pool on the cliffside

Nestled against the rock of the Château hill, at the entrance to Vieux-Nice, La Pérouse hides one of the most beautiful pools in the city: a heated pool surrounded by bougainvillea, suspended above the Mediterranean. Here, you can forget the hustle and bustle of the Promenade for an almost provincial calm, just a stone’s throw from the lively streets. Air-conditioned rooms, a terrace, and an open-air restaurant complete this intimate four-star hotel, undoubtedly our favourite address for escaping the Nice heatwave.

In the heart of the city, a few minutes from the Promenade, the Splendid offers a high-up experience. Its rooftop pool, extended by a solarium and a spa, provides a 360-degree view of Nice’s rooftops and hills. When the city heats up, head up to cool off with a drink in hand, overlooking the panorama. Air conditioning, a hammam, and a gym make it a reliable choice, ideally located for exploring on foot.

Hyatt Regency Palais de la Méditerranée, the pool facing the Baie des Anges

NICE · PROMENADE DES ANGLAIS · OUTDOOR POOL FACING THE SEA · MASSÉNA TRAM · 5 STARS

Behind its famous listed Art Deco facade, located on the Promenade des Anglais, the Palais de la Méditerranée boasts an outdoor pool facing the Baie des Anges. Subtle air conditioning, a spa, and sea-view rooms: it’s the five-star option for those who want the beach within reach of a sun lounger and the coolness of a pool upon return. More expensive than our previous suggestions, but the location, right on the water on Nice’s most beautiful avenue, comes at a price.

Other addresses to take a dip in Nice

The city has no shortage of good options. Le Méridien Nice and Radisson Blu, both on the Promenade, feature rooftop pools with views of the blue expanse, perfect for the end of the day. The Boscolo, in a 19th-century palace, offers a more refined atmosphere. All are air-conditioned: in Nice, air conditioning is now a booking criterion in itself, just like a sea view.

Air conditioning and pool: the anti-heatwave combo on the Riviera

The phenomenon is clearly measurable. During recent heatwaves, searches for hotels filtered by “air conditioning” surged by over 424% in two weeks (Hotels.com), and 42% of travellers now say they prefer cooler accommodation and destinations (Booking.com). On the French Riviera, where tropical nights are becoming more frequent, an air-conditioned room with a pool is no longer a luxury: it’s the condition for a successful summer stay.

Our tips for choosing well in Nice

A few useful tips. Check that the pool is freely accessible to guests and during what hours, as some close early in the evening. Prefer a room on the courtyard side or on a higher floor to catch the breeze, and confirm the presence of real air conditioning, not just a fan. Finally, in case of a heatwave alert, book without delay: air-conditioned rooms with pools in Nice sell out very quickly as soon as the temperature soars. Still in the capital?
