Maldives or Mauritius: which island to choose for a luxury stay in 2026?

Last updated:
In brief
  • The Maldives · absolute privacy (often one island = one resort), overwater bungalows and turquoise lagoons. Ideal for couples and honeymoons. More expensive.
  • Mauritius · more accessible and much more varied (culture, hikes, golf, excursions). Perfect for families and active stays.
  • In terms of budget, the Maldives are generally more expensive (long flight + seaplane transfer). Mauritius adapts to more budgets.
  • When to go · the Maldives mainly from December to April; Mauritius is pleasant a large part of the year.

Maldives or Mauritius: the verdict in brief

Choose the Maldives if you are primarily looking for intimacy, postcard-perfect beaches, and relaxation for two; choose Mauritius if you want to vary your pleasures (sea, culture, nature, golf) and travel with family without breaking the bank. Both islands play in the luxury league, but with two different philosophies.

The Setting and Atmosphere

The Maldives offer the luxury of isolation · an atoll, an island, a resort, and nothing but the lagoon. People come here to disconnect, not to visit. Mauritius, conversely, is a truly inhabited island · villages, markets, mountains, botanical gardens, and golf courses. You can rent a car and explore, which is impossible in the Maldives.

Budget: Which is more expensive?

For equivalent services, the Maldives almost always cost more than Mauritius. You have to factor in the long-haul flight (often €700 to €1,500 round trip depending on the season) to which, in the Maldives, a seaplane or speedboat transfer to the resort is added (often €200 to €500 per person). Mauritius, better served and more extensive, offers a wider range of accommodations and all-inclusive packages, thus more flexible budgets.

How to get there and how long is the flight?

Allow approximately 11 hours of flight time for Mauritius and 12 to 15 hours (including layover) to reach Malé, in the Maldives. In Mauritius, the airport directly serves the island, and the road does the rest. In the Maldives, arrival in Malé is just one step · the real journey begins with the transfer to your atoll, often by seaplane, a spectacular experience in itself.

When to go?

The best period for the Maldives is from December to April (dry season), with prices at their highest during this window. Mauritius enjoys a pleasant climate for much of the year, with a mild austral winter (May to November) ideal for escaping the humid summer. To save money, aim for the shoulder seasons.

For a honeymoon or couples’ trip

For a honeymoon, the Maldives remain a step ahead thanks to their overwater villas, private dinners with your feet in the sand, and unparalleled intimacy. Mauritius remains very romantic, but its advantage lies elsewhere · you can alternate between cocooning and discovery.

For family vacations

For a family stay, Mauritius wins · kids’ clubs, varied activities, excursions, and all-inclusive packages are more numerous and more affordable there. The Maldives are also suitable for families, but the enclosed nature of a single island and the cost of transfers weigh more heavily.
