Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam review: our honest verdict

A 1916 landmark on the waterfront

Amsterdam has never been short of landmark addresses. And yet the Amrâth Grand Hotel, set inside the former head office of the Dutch East India shipping company, still manages to surprise. This richly sculpted building, a masterpiece of the Amsterdam School, offers a stay that combines history, opulence and genuine hospitality.

A listed monument, the building dates from 1916 and makes its case through spectacular architecture: red brick, exuberant curves, worked ironwork and coloured stained glass. It is an immediate immersion in Dutch Art Nouveau. The interior lives up to it, with high ceilings, fine woodwork and period glass that give the rooms a theatrical, almost dreamlike quality.

Ideally placed in the historic centre of Amsterdam, only 500 metres from Centraal Station, the hotel puts the city’s main sights within reach: the red-light district, the UNESCO-listed canals, the Rembrandt House and the Jordaan are all a few minutes’ walk away.

Rooms and suites with timeless poise

The Amrâth has 205 rooms and suites, decorated with a discreet luxury and offering the comfort you expect of a five-star house. Woodwork, fine fabrics, marble bathrooms and views over the canals or the rooftops of Amsterdam: each room holds the balance between historic charm and contemporary kit.

Our favourite: the Tower Suite, set in the former observation tower, with a panoramic view over the historic centre and the harbour. A romantic gem.

Breakfast in a theatrical setting

Served in the majestic dining room of The Seven Seas, breakfast at the Amrâth Grand Hotel is a celebration of the senses. From the doorway, the tall windows let in a soft light that lifts the coloured glass and the old woodwork. The setting is exceptional, almost cinematic.

The buffet is rich and carefully put together: all-butter pastries, artisan breads, matured Dutch cheeses, selected charcuterie, cut fruit, smoked salmon, organic yoghurts and a good range of plant-based dairy. An egg station cooks scrambled eggs, omelettes and eggs Benedict to order.

On the drinks side, cold-pressed juices, smoothies, freshly ground coffee and premium teas are served without limit. Special mention for the house hot chocolate, thick and comforting, a rarity in city hotels.

A nice touch: a vegetarian or gluten-free breakfast can be arranged on request at the time of booking. The service is attentive and multilingual, which adds a further note of polish.

A wellness centre under stone vaults

Under the stone vaults, the wellness centre surprises with its hushed elegance. An indoor pool, a sauna, a hammam and a range of signature treatments let travellers recover after a day of walking. That is a rare luxury in the middle of Amsterdam. One reservation: the area is unstaffed, and upkeep on the day of our visit was below the standard the rest of the hotel sets.

Our verdict on the Amrâth Grand Hotel

The Amrâth Grand Hotel Amsterdam is far more than a place to sleep: it is a destination in itself.
