The Pierre Hotel in New York: $2 Billion Sale Stalls Over a $100 Million Deposit

The sale of The Pierre, the 5th Avenue palace facing Central Park, is hanging on a bank transfer. The prospective buyer, associated with Dorchester Collection, was supposed to pay a $100 million deposit before the building owners’ vote. By late September 2026, the money still had not arrived. And the transaction, estimated at $2 billion, could see both residents and hotel employees depart.

In brief
  • 🏨 The hotel · The Pierre, A Taj Hotel, opened in 1930 at 2 East 61st Street; 189 rooms including 49 suites.
  • 🏢 The seller · the shareholders of the cooperative that has owned the building since 1959; Taj only operates the hotel on a lease.
  • 💰 The buyer · Sabre Park Avenue, a company owned by Motasem Khashoggi, with Dorchester Collection managing the hotel.
  • ⏳ The roadblock · a $100M deposit announced on 4 September 2026, still not received by late September.
  • 🗳️ Next steps · the sale requires a two-thirds majority of shares; residents are expected to leave within the year.

Opened in October 1930 and designed by architects Schultze & Weaver, The Pierre rises 41 storeys at the corner of 5th Avenue and 61st Street, overlooking Central Park. The hotel features 189 rooms, including 49 suites, and three dining venues: Perrine, The Rotunda and the Two E Bar Lounge. Since 1959, the building has operated as a cooperative: the owners of the roughly 75 private apartments also own the physical structure of the hotel. Indian group Taj (IHCL, Tata Group) has operated it on a lease since 2005 and carried out a renovation of approximately $100 million, completed in 2010.

A $2 billion offer

The offer is led by Sabre Park Avenue LLC, a company controlled by businessman Motasem Khashoggi. Dorchester Collection, the luxury hotel group owned by the Brunei Investment Agency and operator of Le Plaza Athénée and Le Meurice in Paris, is partnering on the project to take over hotel management. The cooperative board has signed a non-binding letter of intent; the $2 billion figure has never been officially confirmed, and the exact financial structure remains private.

Taj, for its part, points out that it does not own the property. As early as 22 September 2025, the Indian group described reports of its departure as “incorrect, misleading and speculative,” specifying that it holds leasehold rights and continues to operate the hotel. Taj has also recently opened its first hotel in continental Europe, in Frankfurt.

The missing $100 million deposit

During a shareholders’ meeting held on 29 July 2026 in the hotel’s Cotillion Room, buyer representatives assured attendees that funds were available and would be deposited and verified prior to the vote. On 4 September, the board chairman wrote to shareholders stating that a $100 million wire transfer order had been issued. By late September, the deposit had still not arrived, even though the voting window was already open. An entity linked to the buyer claims to be “fully committed.”

Residents and employees on the front line

The sale requires approval from two-thirds of shareholders. If it goes through, residents would be expected to vacate their apartments within approximately twelve months, and hotel staff would be laid off. Owners include Howard Lutnick, the US Secretary of Commerce, who owns the penthouse.

Fashion designer Tory Burch, a shareholder through her company Autumn River, had previously sued the board alongside other owners to obtain the letter of intent and three years of meeting minutes. With those documents now handed over, Justice Andrew Borrok of the New York State Supreme Court dismissed the case as moot in early December 2025. The legal proceedings therefore did not rule on the merits of the sale.

Our verdict

The Pierre is one of 5th Avenue’s historic palaces, and its fate matters as much to its residents as to the Manhattan hotel landscape. Following the reopening of the Waldorf Astoria and next to The Plaza, its transition to Dorchester would make 5th Avenue a showcase for global luxury hospitality. But until the deposit is paid and the vote secured, nothing is finalised: the hotel continues to be operated by Taj, and remains open for bookings.
