Closed in 2017, the Waldorf Astoria New York reopened on 15 July 2025 on Park Avenue following an eight-year restoration: it now features just 375 rooms and suites, down from 1,400 previously, with interiors designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon and the largest Guerlain spa in the world. From the 1893 Waldorf to the Art Deco masterpiece
The Waldorf opened in 1893 on Fifth Avenue, the Astoria in 1897, and both hotels were demolished in 1929 to make way for the Empire State Building. The current Waldorf Astoria, an Art Deco masterpiece designed by Schultze & Weaver, opened on 1 October 1931 at 301 Park Avenue, spanning 47 storeys. Hilton took over management in 1949 and bought the property in 1972. The lobby clock, crafted in London for the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, remains its iconic symbol.
In 2015, Chinese conglomerate Anbang acquired the hotel for $1.95 billion, retaining Hilton as operator. The hotel closed on 1 March 2017, and its historical interiors were landmarked a few days later. Owned by Dajia Insurance Group since 2020, the building was put up for sale in February 2026, though no transaction has been concluded to date.
Eight years of restoration
The architectural restoration was entrusted to SOM, the hotel’s interiors to Pierre-Yves Rochon, the residences to Jean-Louis Deniot, and the restaurants to studio AvroKO. The room count was reduced by nearly three-quarters to enlarge the living spaces, while the former Waldorf Towers were converted into private residences.

The rates below were recorded on the official website on 27 September 2026 for two adults for the night of 12 November 2026, including all taxes and fees. The Empire Suite (210 sq m) and the Waldorf Astoria Suite (over 465 sq m) were fully booked on this date.

Peacock Alley, Lex Yard and Yoshoku
Peacock Alley, the lobby bar and lounge, still houses Cole Porter’s piano, featuring cocktails crafted by Jeff Bell. Lex Yard is the American brasserie by chef Michael Anthony, while Yoshoku offers kaiseki-inspired Japanese cuisine. The Bull and Bear has not reopened. The hotel holds two Michelin Keys.
The Guerlain Spa and practical details
On the 5th floor, the Guerlain Wellness Spa spans approximately 2,000 sq m, featuring sixteen treatment rooms, a hammam, and cryotherapy facilities; the swimming pool is reserved exclusively for residents.
