From Mivart’s to Art Deco icon

The story began in 1812, when James Mivart opened a hotel at 51 Brook Street; William and Marianne Claridge expanded into neighbouring houses and the establishment took their name in the mid-19th century. Richard D’Oyly Carte bought it in 1893 and had it rebuilt: the current red brick building opened in 1898. In the 1920s and 1930s, architect Oswald Milne turned it into London’s Art Deco icon, whose ballroom is now listed.

The hotel belongs to the Maybourne group, along with The Connaught and The Berkeley. Without ever closing, it hand-excavated five basement levels, providing 5,500 m² for a spa, swimming pool and cellar, and added new floors to the roof. It has been awarded three Michelin Keys, the guide’s highest distinction for hospitality.

Afternoon tea under the Chihuly chandelier

Tea is served in the Foyer & Reading Room, under “Gilded Dawn”, the Dale Chihuly sculpture-chandelier composed of 800 pieces of glass. The traditional menu starts from £95, the champagne version at £110 and the rosé version at £125. From 3 November to 3 January, except 25 December, only the festive version is served, from £120 on weekdays and £130 at weekends, while the hall hosts the designer Christmas tree: in 2025, it was designed by Daniel Lee for Burberry.

Rooms and suites: 2026 prices

The prices below were taken from the official booking engine on 27 September 2026, at the flexible rate, including 20% VAT, excluding the optional 5% service charge. Signature suites are not priced online and are booked upon request.

The signature suites each bear the mark of a designer: the Royal Suite by Michelle Wu, a tribute to the 1953 coronation, The Residence by André Fu, The Octagon by Pierre-Yves Rochon, and the Penthouse by Rémi Tessier, which occupies the entire roof with its four bedrooms and over 80 works by Damien Hirst.

Dante Mayfair, the Fumoir and the bars

Since mid-June 2026, Dante Mayfair, by Linden Pride and Nathalie Hudson, has replaced Claridge’s Restaurant, which closed on 10 May. Davies and Brook and Fera have closed, and none of the hotel’s restaurants hold a star in 2026. The Claridge’s Bar, designed by David Collins Studio, the Fumoir, a purple Art Deco bar with no reservations, and the Painter’s Room complete the offering, along with a fourteen-seat chef’s table, L’Epicerie, and Richard Hart’s bakery. The Perrotin gallery has opened its first London address within the hotel.

The André Fu spa and practical information

Completed in 2022 across three underground levels, the Claridge’s Spa by André Fu offers the hotel its first swimming pool, under a ribbed vault, with a hammam, saunas and seven treatment rooms.
