Sofitel Thalassa Alger Sea & Spa, set to become Africa’s largest thalassotherapy centre, enters final phase

  • The Sofitel Thalassa Alger Sea & Spa, located at Club des Pins, will be Africa’s largest thalassotherapy centre, with a daily capacity of 1,000 guests.
  • An Accor-managed complex combining a Sofitel Thalassa and a Sofitel Diététique, overlooking the sea and a private beach.
  • Launched in 2017 and subsequently delayed by the pandemic, construction is entering its final stage, with completion expected in 2026.
  • Designed by Italian architecture firm Fabris & Partners, the development is led by Algerian state company SIH.

Africa is preparing to welcome its largest sanctuary of marine wellness. Located at Club des Pins on the Algiers coastline, the Sofitel Thalassa Alger Sea & Spa is entering the final stage of construction. Spearheaded by the Accor group, this monumental seafront complex on the Mediterranean aims to establish itself as a benchmark for thalassotherapy across the continent.

Africa’s largest thalassotherapy centre

From the outset, the project has aimed for continent-wide scale. With an announced capacity of 1,000 guests per day, the thalassotherapy centre will be the largest in Africa. It will draw upon the therapeutic benefits of seawater across an extensive treatment area, crafted specifically for total rejuvenation. The property also features a dedicated wellness component, with a Sofitel Diététique focusing on fitness and nutritional balance.

An Accor seafront complex at Club des Pins

Situated in Staouéli, close to the Sheraton Club des Pins, the complex overlooks the sea and a private beach. Its contemporary, curving architecture draws inspiration from the marine world, expanding into two hotel wings connected by a vast treatment area open to the coastline. Managed by Accor, it stands as one of the group’s most ambitious Sofitel addresses on the African continent.

Construction launched in 2017 enters final stage

The journey has been a long one. Launched in 2017, the project was put on hold for around two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, before work resumed in earnest. Developed by the state-owned enterprise SIH, the construction employs modern techniques and premium materials, commensurate with its grand ambition. Handover is expected during 2026, following several delays.

Algeria bets on wellness tourism

Beyond its sheer scale, the project illustrates a broader strategy. Algeria is stepping up thermal and thalassotherapy projects to diversify its tourism offer and attract guests seeking health and wellness retreats. By entrusting the management of such a flagship property to an international group like Accor, the country aims to firmly establish itself on the Mediterranean luxury tourism map.
