Opening a hotel in Evolène is unlike anywhere else: there was no building land, only empty houses. Le Central therefore opened at the end of August 2026 right in the village, featuring seven rooms and a spa carved into the rock, as the first act of Le Rucher d’Evolène, a dispersed hotel that will eventually occupy some fifteen ancient buildings. The Val d’Hérens, at 1,300 metres, had never seen anything like it.
A hotel with no single building, but an entire village
The concept is known as albergo diffuso, originating from Italy: rather than building anew, existing houses scattered throughout the village are restored and linked by a shared hotel service. Le Rucher applies this method to Evolène, a remarkably well-preserved village where stilted raccards and blackened timber houses bear witness to several centuries of peasant architecture. Le Central, a former building in the centre, acts as the main house with its reception and seven rooms. Around it, two chalets and two raccards transformed into accommodation opened at the same time. Others will follow, up to about fifteen addresses.

A cave spa beneath the village
This is the project’s most spectacular and least visible feature. The spa has been excavated beneath the village in the shape of a cave, an explicit reference to the underground lake of Saint-Léonard some thirty kilometres away, and is accessed from the hotel via an underground passage. The mineral vocabulary remains consistent with the rest: soapstone, the very material used for Valais stoves, wood and ancient stonework, complemented by weathering steel for contemporary touches. A sauna, pool and treatment rooms complete the experience.

What this changes for the Val d’Hérens
The Val d’Hérens relies on summer tourism and family skiing, far from the high-altitude resorts that define the reputation of the Valais. A hotel project of this nature does not so much meet existing demand as attempt to create it, appealing to travellers seeking an inhabited village rather than a resort. The gamble is not unprecedented: the albergo diffuso has established itself in the Apennines and Sardinia as a response to depopulating villages. It remains to be seen whether it can succeed in the Swiss Alps, where restoration costs are incomparable.
Our perspective
Seven rooms is very few, and therein lies the crux. At this scale, profitability cannot come from volume; it will rely on the spa, the future restaurant and Le Rucher’s ability to open subsequent buildings without losing the restoration quality of the first ones. The risk is familiar to all albergo diffusi: scaling up too quickly, turning the whole into a collection of scattered rentals rather than a cohesive hotel. The real test awaits in 2027, with the opening of the restaurant and the announced rooms.
