On 5 October 2026, Historic Hotels of America published its annual list of the 25 most haunted historic hotels in the United States, from Colonial Williamsburg (1750) to the Queen Mary ocean liner (1936). It is not a ranking: the hotels are listed by construction date. To join this programme of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a hotel must be at least 50 years old and be designated a National Historic Landmark or listed in (or eligible for) the National Register of Historic Places. From more than 300 members, the Historic Hotels of America team chose these 25 for the quality and quantity of their legends, their willingness to share them and their Halloween 2026 offers.

Williamsburg Inn, keys that jingle at night

Opened in 1937, the Williamsburg Inn is the flagship of Colonial Williamsburg, billed as the largest living history museum in the country, an open-air site that also rents out colonial houses dating from 1750. According to Historic Hotels of America, guests at the Brick House Tavern hear keys jingling at night, see a man in colonial dress looking into an upstairs room and smell pipe tobacco; Thomas Jefferson is said to haunt the Market Square Tavern, where he lodged as a student.
In October, the Haunted Williamsburg tour recounts the colonial ghost stories of the 18th century. As of 7 October, the Inn was fully booked for the night of the 31st; the following night, 1 to 2 November, an Inn Superior room cost 659 dollars for two before tax, or 801 dollars all in.
Omni Bedford Springs and the girl in the apron

This spa resort favoured by American presidents has the fullest Halloween programme in our selection. According to Historic Hotels of America, figures in Victorian and Edwardian dress, including a woman climbing the stairs and a little girl in a white apron, appear around the historic indoor pool; the Buchanan Room, frequented by President James Buchanan, echoes with unexplained knocking, and cigar smoke drifts through the Daniel Webster Room.
The Haunted History Tours run from Wednesday to Sunday at 6pm and 7.30pm, all year round. On top of these come a Murder Mystery Dinner on 24 October, a costume party on the 31st and the Wandering Cauldron, a witchcraft-themed pop-up bar, in September and October. On the night of 31 October, a Deluxe Room with two double beds cost 518 dollars for two, taxes and fees included.
The Omni Bedford Springs website →Omni Parker House: Harvey Parker still on duty

Billed as the oldest continuously operating hotel in the United States, and the birthplace of the Boston cream pie, the Parker House is said never to have lost its founder. According to Historic Hotels of America, Harvey Parker, who died in 1884, has been recognised by guests from his portraits; the tenth floor is associated with orbs, the third with Charles Dickens and the actress Charlotte Cushman, amid cigar smoke and lifts that stop on their own.
During the season, resident historian Susan Wilson gives her history tours a haunted twist. On the night of 31 October, a Traditional Room with a queen bed cost 500 dollars for two, taxes and fees included.
The Omni Parker House website →Little Maurice on the Monteleone’s 14th floor

A grand family-run hotel in the French Quarter, on Royal Street, the Monteleone is famous for its revolving Carousel Bar. According to Historic Hotels of America, little Maurice Begere, who died of a fever at the hotel in the 1890s while his parents were at the French Opera House, is said to have appeared to his mother to tell her not to cry; guests still come across him on the 14th floor, as they do “Mrs. Clean”, a housekeeper who supposedly goes over the rooms again after the cleaning.
On the night of 31 October, a Traditional King Room cost 682 dollars for two, taxes and fees included. Elsewhere in town, the Fairmont New Orleans opens on 2 November.
Hotel del Coronado: who haunts room 3327?

The Hotel del Coronado website →Jekyll Island Club Resort, seven ghosts on record

Once the winter club of the Rockefellers, Morgans and Pulitzers, on an unspoilt Georgia island, the Jekyll Island Club counts seven ghosts, according to Historic Hotels of America: a former president on the veranda at sunset, a woman in a blue evening gown looking for the waiter she danced with, a 1920s bellman delivering suits to grooms-to-be, and J.P. Morgan’s cigar in the early morning in his former apartment at Sans Souci Cottage.
In October, the Hotel History Tours take a haunted turn and stop at the spots said to be inhabited. On the night of 31 October, the Apartment cost 466 dollars for two, taxes and fees included.
The Jekyll Island Club website →Hawthorne Hotel and Salem’s room 325

Less luxurious than the other addresses in our selection, the Hawthorne is nonetheless a must for Halloween: it stands in Salem, the town of the 1692 witch trials. According to Historic Hotels of America, room 325 is reputed to be the most haunted, with its cold spots and scent of freshly cut flowers; a female ghost haunts the sixth floor, room 621 turns its lights and taps on by itself, and in 1990 the hotel held a séance to contact Harry Houdini.
The “Phobia” Halloween Ball takes place on Saturday 24 October 2026, for over-21s only, and the Halloween Ball and Halloween Night packages are sold out; weekends require a two-night stay in October. On the night of 31 October, a Fairmont King Room cost 687 dollars for two, taxes and fees included, the highest price in our selection that night.
The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn website →Hermosa Inn: “Lon did it”, say the staff

This intimate adobe hacienda at the foot of Camelback Mountain keeps its builder’s name alive at its restaurant, LON’s. According to Historic Hotels of America, cowboy painter Lon Megargee, who built the house with his own hands, is still around: a cowboy’s reflection in the casita mirrors, tools tidied away in the cellar, a mysterious Pink Lady; staff close every incident with “Lon did it”.
A self-guided ghost tour is available on request at check-in. On the night of 31 October, a Rancho Casita cost 549 dollars for two before taxes and fees, at the public rate on the hotel’s website.
The Hermosa Inn website →Sleeping aboard the Queen Mary, cabin B340
Here you sleep aboard an Art Deco Cunard liner moored in Long Beach, 90 years after its maiden voyage. According to Historic Hotels of America, the front desk receives reports about cabin B340 (flickering lights, a running tap, portholes opening on their own), watertight door no. 13, a lady in white dancing in the lounges and the former first-class pool, described as a “vortex”.
