IHG signs five hotels at once in Taiwan and integrates its loyalty programme into LINE

In brief
  • 🇹🇼 Five signings at once · the IHG group’s Taiwanese portfolio will grow from 17 to 22 hotels
  • 🏙️ Taipei, Taitung and Pingtung · from the city to hot springs, via cultural and seaside tourism
  • HUALUXE makes its debut on the island, with a first hotel in Taipei signed with Fullon Hotels & Resorts
  • 📱 An app within LINE · the loyalty programme is integrated into the messaging app used by Taiwanese locals
  • 🏨 Eight brands already present, from luxury to economy

Expansion announcements often look alike. This one is worth pausing over, less for its volume than for what it reveals about a strategy. The IHG group is signing five hotels at once in Taiwan, growing its local portfolio from 17 to 22 properties, while integrating its loyalty programme where its customers actually are.

Three territories, three clienteles

The five projects do not target the same traveller. They are spread across Taipei, Taitung and Pingtung, three areas with very different profiles.

Taipei is the urban and business market. Taitung, on the east coast, thrives on cultural tourism and its hot springs. Pingtung, in the far south of the island, is a seaside destination. The group is therefore covering the city, thermal tourism and the beach in a single wave · a way to avoid relying on a single type of stay in an island market.

HUALUXE arrives in Taiwan

This is the most notable element of the batch. HUALUXE Hotels & Resorts is entering the Taiwanese market, with a first property in Taipei signed in partnership with Fullon Hotels & Resorts, an established local player.

Publicité

The brand occupies a special place in the group’s portfolio: it was designed around the codes of Chinese hospitality, from welcoming etiquette to the tea ritual. Seeing it arrive in Taipei via a Taiwanese partner says something about how major groups approach this market · with a local player rather than directly.

The loyalty programme enters LINE

The other part of the announcement is by no means a technical detail. IHG is launching an app for its IHG One Rewards programme inside LINE, the messaging app that shapes Taiwanese digital life just as WhatsApp does in Europe.

Members can manage their membership, check their points and status, search for a hotel and book, without ever leaving the app they already have open. It is an implicit recognition that an international chain’s in-house app does not work everywhere. Rather than forcing users to download yet another app, the group is positioning itself where attention is already focused.

What this double announcement means

Signing five hotels is a matter of development. Entering LINE is a matter of distribution. Announcing them together is no coincidence: a portfolio of 22 properties is only useful if it can be booked where customers are looking.

In a market where the group already has eight brands, from luxury to economy, the question is no longer about being present, but about being chosen. These two announcements address the latter, not the former.
