Alsace has a unique characteristic that few French regions share: you can sleep at the foot of the vineyards, twenty minutes from a Vosges peak, and dine the same evening at a two-Michelin-starred restaurant. Spa hotels here have followed this compact geography, and the choice is less about the quality of the facilities, which is generally high, and more about what you want to see when you open the shutters. Here are six addresses, from forest palace to village house, highlighting what truly sets them apart.
1. La Cheneaudière & Spa, in Colroy-la-Roche: the region’s largest spa

Nestled in the Bruche valley, away from the Wine Route, La Cheneaudière plays a card that no one disputes in Alsace: scale. Its spa exceeds 2,500 m², organised around water, light, and warmth, in a play of mineral, plant, and wood materials. At this level of surface area, we are no longer talking about a wellness area attached to a hotel, but a destination in itself, where you can spend an entire day without passing through the same spot twice.
The establishment is a five-star Relais & Châteaux, awarded two Keys in the Michelin Guide 2025. On the dining side, Le Feuillage, led by Chef Jean-Paul Acker, earned one star in the Michelin Guide 2026 and two toques in Gault & Millau, while Le Chêne offers more classic cuisine. This is the address to remember if the spa is the reason for your stay, and not just an add-on.

2. L’Hôtel des Berges, in Illhaeusern: the spa adjacent to two Michelin stars

Here, the order of priorities is reversed, and intentionally so. L’Hôtel des Berges was born from L’Auberge de l’Ill, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant that the Haeberlin family has run for over one hundred and fifty years, now under the guidance of Marc Haeberlin. Guests come first to dine, and stay to avoid driving back.
The Spa des Saules extends this local philosophy even into the treatment rooms: treatments are based on willow oil, in partnership with Nature Effiscience and CHO Nature, echoing the trees that line the river. The space includes a heated outdoor pool, a sauna, a hammam, and treatment cabins. The establishment is a five-star Relais & Châteaux, awarded one Michelin Key and a member of Les Grandes Tables du Monde.

3. Le Chambard, in Kaysersberg: Olivier Nasti’s restaurant and its village spa

At the heart of one of the most beautiful villages on the Wine Route, Le Chambard owes its reputation to its restaurant. La Table d’Olivier Nasti holds two Michelin Guide stars, the first obtained in 2005 and the second in 2014, under the guidance of a Meilleur Ouvrier de France, with wine pairings signed by sommelier Jean-Baptiste Klein. The Winstub, simpler, serves traditional Alsatian cuisine.
The spa, meanwhile, plays a different tune than that of Colroy-la-Roche: 200 m², an infinity pool, a sauna, a hot tub, and a hammam. It’s a house spa, not a centre. A caveat to be aware of before booking: it will close entirely from 1 January to 31 May 2027 for renovation. For a stay within this period, it’s better to turn to one of the other addresses in this selection.

4. Le 5 Terres Hôtel & Spa, in Barr: a spa under sandstone vaults

This is the most unique address on this list, and it’s due to its architecture. The 5 Terres spa occupies centuries-old Vosges sandstone vaults, the pink stone that built Strasbourg Cathedral. Swimming under sandstone arches is far from a reconstructed set, and it truly changes the experience.
The establishment, a member of the MGallery collection, has 26 rooms and one suite, facing Barr’s listed town hall façade. The spa features an indoor pool and a 20-metre outdoor pool, heated and open from June to September, a sauna, and a hammam. It is SPA-A certified and works with Valmont and Gemology. La Table du 5, a gourmet restaurant, is led by Chef Joël Philipps, a former Michelin-starred chef.

5. L’Esquisse Hôtel & Spa, in Colmar: the five-star city-centre hotel

Alsatian spa hotels are mostly in the countryside. L’Esquisse is the urban exception, located in the heart of the Champ de Mars, Colmar’s green oasis in the city centre. You step out of the spa and are within walking distance of Little Venice, which no other address in this selection offers.
The five-star hotel, a member of the MGallery collection, boasts 62 rooms and suites. Its spa features a heated indoor pool, a jacuzzi, a sauna, and a hammam, with treatments by Clarins. The establishment does not have a gourmet restaurant but offers a K Bar open from midday to midnight, a monthly tea time, and brunch on the first Sunday of the month. This is the logical choice for those who want to combine spa and city, without a car.

6. Le Clos des Sources, in Thannenkirch: 1,000 m² of spa in a three-star hotel

This is the surprise of this selection, and proof that a large spa is not reserved for five-star hotels. Le Clos des Sources boasts 1,000 m² of wellness in a three-star hotel, featuring an indoor pool with jets, a jacuzzi, three treatment cabins, a hammam, saunas, and a relaxation room equipped with a hay bed.
The most interesting aspect lies elsewhere: access is limited to ten people per day or per evening. With such a large area, this amounts to having an almost private spa, which larger establishments cannot offer during high season. The hotel, in a contemporary chalet style, has 33 rooms, serves homemade cuisine with local products, and is located on the GR5, within reach of Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle.

Which to choose, depending on your stay
If the spa is the reason for your trip, La Cheneaudière has no equivalent in terms of size. If you come primarily for the dining, L’Hôtel des Berges and Le Chambard place you at the foot of two two-Michelin-starred establishments. If you want to visit Colmar on foot, L’Esquisse is the only one that allows it. If you seek tranquillity rather than prestige, Le Clos des Sources and its limit of ten people compare favourably with addresses twice as expensive. And if you want to bring back a memory of the place, the sandstone vaults of Le 5 Terres are Alsace’s most photogenic feature.
How much does a night cost, and how to book
None of these six establishments publish a price list on their website: prices go through booking engines and vary greatly depending on the season, with Colmar’s Christmas market and the grape harvest driving up overnight stays from September to December. We prefer not to display price ranges that would be inaccurate the next day.
What we can say, however, is their positioning. Three establishments play in the superior category: La Cheneaudière and L’Hôtel des Berges, both five-star Relais & Châteaux, and L’Esquisse, a five-star MGallery. Le Chambard and Le 5 Terres are a step below, in the high-end village category. Le Clos des Sources, a three-star hotel, is the only one to offer a spa of this size at a mid-range hotel price, which explains why it is fully booked long in advance.
A piece of advice that applies to all six: book treatments at the same time as your room. The number of cabins is limited everywhere, and in Thannenkirch, the limit of ten people per day makes last-minute spa access impossible.
Vineyard or mountain: how to decide
The question truly arises, because the two Alsaces are not visited in the same way. On the Wine Route, in Barr, Kaysersberg, or Colmar, villages follow one another every ten kilometres, and you spend your days outdoors, from cellar to cobbled square. The spa there is a return to calm at the end of the afternoon.
In the Vosges valleys, in Colroy-la-Roche or Thannenkirch, the logic is reversed: nature is the permanent backdrop, distances are longer, and the spa becomes the heart of the stay rather than a mere interlude. In winter, this second option gains an advantage, especially since snow falls there when the vineyards remain grey.
One last practical tip: Colmar and Strasbourg are less than three hours from Paris by TGV, and all these addresses are less than an hour’s drive from one of the two stations. Book treatments at the same time as your room; the number of cabins is limited everywhere, and it is particularly so in Thannenkirch.
