IHG Hotels & Resorts is set to elevate one of its Algarve properties into the ultra-luxury segment. The future InterContinental Vilamoura will open in April 2027, following a complete transformation of the current Crowne Plaza Vilamoura into a 323-room, five-star hotel. This will be Portugal’s fourth InterContinental, located in one of the country’s most sought-after southern destinations.
- What’s changing: The Crowne Plaza Vilamoura becomes an InterContinental, IHG’s luxury brand.
- Capacity: 323 rooms, unchanged from the existing Crowne Plaza.
- Opening: April 2027.
- Where: In Vilamoura, Algarve, a stone’s throw from the marina, golf courses, and the beach.
- Significance: Portugal’s fourth InterContinental.

A Crowne Plaza Transformed into an InterContinental
This operation is not a new build but an upgrade: IHG is converting its Crowne Plaza Vilamoura, which opened in 2009 as Portugal’s very first Crowne Plaza, into an InterContinental. The number of keys remains identical at 323 rooms, confirming that the existing property is being repositioned within the luxury segment. This repositioning is driven by the asset owner, HDP Algarve, chaired by Mário Vasco Pereira. According to trade press, this would be the first InterContinental in the Algarve, although the group does not explicitly state this. No investment amount has been disclosed.

Vilamoura, Marina, Golf, and Algarve Beaches
Vilamoura offers a combination highly sought after by high-end tourism: one of Portugal’s largest leisure marinas, several renowned golf courses, and the golden beach of Vilamoura. This trilogy of sea, golf, and marina, coupled with a buoyant market for business events, makes the resort a natural fit for an international luxury brand.

IHG’s Luxury Strategy in Portugal
Portugal is described by IHG as one of its fastest-growing markets in Southern Europe. The Vilamoura conversion strengthens its Luxury & Lifestyle segment, which it presents as the second largest in the world, alongside properties such as the InterContinental Cascais-Estoril. For the group, transforming an existing asset into an InterContinental is a quick way to expand its luxury footprint without waiting for a new build.
Our View
Converting a Crowne Plaza into an InterContinental is a bet that the address and location are more valuable than the brand they previously carried. The challenge will be to genuinely elevate the service and spaces to the level expected of a five-star hotel, beyond a mere change of branding. It is a challenge the brand has proven capable of meeting at its historic properties, as exemplified by our review of the InterContinental Paris Le Grand.
