HOSHINOYA reinvents carceral hell as a luxury paradise · and it is currently the most unsettling (and most desirable) address. In Nara, Japan, a century-old former prison is set to become the most fascinating hotel opening of 2026.
The Perfect Luxury Hotel Crime
Some places imprison you. Others set you free. HOSHINOYA Nara Prison does both · and that is precisely what makes it the most captivating opening of 2026. Imagine: sleeping where tormented souls spent their last days, dining in a refectory transformed into a gastronomic temple, gazing at the sunset through the same red brick walls that muffled a century of silences.
On 25 June 2026, Hoshino Resorts will unveil its ninth HOSHINOYA address. More than a heritage renovation, this is a declaration of intent: to transform the ultimate symbol of deprivation into the ultimate luxury experience. Welcome to the era of prison chic.

A Meiji Era Monument Resurrected
Built in **1908 during the Meiji era**, the former Nara Prison was one of the five “Great Prisons” intended to modernise the Japanese judicial system. Designed by architect **Keijiro Yamashita**, it adopted a radial star plan · inspired by the Western “Haviland” system · with a central guard tower overlooking six radiating wings.
Imported red bricks, monumental corridors, a panoptic geometry allowing all inmates to be monitored with a single glance: the building embodied the carceral modernity of early 20th-century Japan.
Classified as an **Important Cultural Property** in 2017, it is now the sole survivor of the five original prisons. **Its new destiny: to become the epicentre of contemporary Japanese luxury.**

48 Suites Born from Solitary Confinement Cells
Architect **Rie Azuma** (Azuma Environment and Architecture Institute) did not seek to erase history · she sublimated it. The former cells have been merged to create **48 suites**, each organised into distinct spaces for sleeping, relaxing, and dining.
Century-old brick walls revealed, slender metal pillars, refined Japanese woodwork: the contemporary intervention dialogues with the carceral memory without ever denying it.
The centrepiece? **The 10-Cell Suite**. Ten cells combined into a single majestic space that reveals the dizzying scale of the original building. **A rare, unsettling, and spectacular experience.**
“By playing with the narrowness of the spaces, connecting and reinterpreting them, we have created an unprecedented spatial experience. The comfort can be compared to that of a European sleeper train.” · **Rie Azuma**

Architecture That Observes You (In a Good Way)
The sun’s path across the brick facades creates a spectacle of moving shadows along the endless corridors. The thick walls filter out sounds from the outside world, offering a bubble of contemplative silence that has become rare.
Clean lines, delicate lighting, warm materials: everything has been designed to soften the carceral rigour without masking it. **One feels the memory of the place at every moment, yet without unease · only fascination.**
“I wanted guests to feel the unique character of this place, subtly, without overemphasising its history.” · **Rie Azuma**
Japanese-French Gastronomy: East Meets West
The restaurant, housed in a separate pavilion, offers **refined Japanese-French cuisine**. Western techniques and Japanese sensibility meet here, centred around seasonal produce and inspirations from the Meiji era.
Local Nara ingredients are precisely sublimated within a listed historic setting. **A culinary experience befitting the location.**
Hotel and Museum: History Accessible to All
The site will also host the **Nara Prison Museum**, open to the public from **27 April 2026**, two months before the hotel’s opening. Visitors will be able to discover the history of the place and its role in the modernisation of Japanese justice.
A dual promise: to preserve national heritage while offering it a new cultural and touristic purpose. **This dual promise: to preserve national heritage while offering it a new cultural and touristic purpose.**

Why You Should Book Now
Reservations have been open since **20 January 2026**. With only **48 suites** available and international buzz already established, the establishment is expected to be fully booked for months.
**HOSHINOYA Nara Prison** is not just a hotel. It is a philosophical experience about transformation, memory, and beauty born from darkness.
**So, ready to be voluntarily imprisoned?**
