Fifth Spanish address, and the first in the heart of Madrid

The group founded by Robert De Niro, chef Nobu Matsuhisa and producer Meir Teper opens its fifth Spanish property on September 1st. Spain thus becomes, by far, the brand’s leading European market, ahead of Italy, the United Kingdom and Portugal combined · an imbalance that speaks volumes about how the brand perceives the continent.

The previous four addresses followed a seaside and festive logic: Ibiza, Marbella, Barcelona, San Sebastián. Madrid breaks with this grammar. It is an administrative and financial capital, without a beach or season, where the clientele is urban year-round.

Fifty rooms only, and it is a choice

The property features 50 rooms and suites, a streamlined format for a capital city. Interior architecture is entrusted to Studio Caramba, which combines natural wood and fabrics in deep greens, with large bay windows opening onto the city. On the top floor, the Nobu suite spans 105 square metres extended by a private terrace above the rooftops.

Studio Caramba designed the fifty keys and common areas, including the wellness space. The vocabulary is the same throughout: warm woods, organic textiles, deep greens and layered lighting. The superior categories bear Japanese names · Zen, Hikari, Yuhi, before the Nobu suite, a discreet way of recalling the house’s origins within a Madrid building. In terms of amenities, signature Nobu bed, BYREDO bath products, Nespresso machine and evening turndown service.

This sizing deserves to be read for what it is. With fifty keys, the hotel cannot live on its room nights alone · it will live on its dining room, bar and rooftop, open to the city. This has been the Nobu model from the beginning: a restaurant that draws locals, and rooms above.

The restaurant occupies three floors, the hotel occupies seven

The dining destination is set at the corner of Calle Alcalá and Calle Cedaceros, across three levels designed by GRONDA, Diego Gronda’s studio, which shift in atmosphere throughout the day. On the ground floor, an accessible lounge. Upstairs, the main dining room is organised around an open kitchen. Below street level, a darker lounge centred around a bar, designed for late evenings. An eight-seat counter is reserved for omakase, a format where guests entrust themselves entirely to the chef · a format of rare intimacy in a capital city, and the only place in the house where the kitchen is watched as much as it is eaten.

It will feature the repertoire that has defined the brand since Beverly Hills in 1994: miso-marinated black cod, shrimp tempura and yellowtail sashimi with jalapeño. On the top floor, The Rooftop at Nobu opens in the late afternoon over the historic centre, offering a cocktail menu and small plates. A third venue, the 26 Lobby Lounge, occupies the hotel’s ground floor and extends the same philosophy · bringing the city into a property that has only fifty rooms to sell.

What Madrid has become for luxury hospitality

The arrival of Nobu is part of a wider trend. In just a few years, the Spanish capital has welcomed properties that previously overlooked it, and the movement shows no sign of slowing down. Madrid offers what few European capitals still provide: character buildings available in the hypercentre, at land values lower than those in Paris or London.

The gamble is not without risk. A city where upscale supply is growing faster than demand eventually enters a price war, and fifty keys leave little margin for absorption. The answer will undoubtedly depend on the restaurant’s footfall rather than the occupancy rate.

Our perspective

Nobu does not sell a room, it sells an address where one is seen · and the hotel is merely the private part of this proposition. By choosing Calle Alcalá rather than the more affluent and expected Salamanca district, the brand demonstrates that it aims for the city’s lively pulse rather than the comfort of its upscale neighbourhoods.

The real question, which the opening will not resolve for several months, remains whether Madrilenians will adopt the restaurant. The success of this fifth Spanish address will depend much more on them than on travellers.
