The World Travel Awards are a commercial tourism awards scheme: winners are chosen by online votes, country by country and category by category. The title of Canada’s best hotel suite was presented at one of the organisation’s regional galas, for the Caribbean and the Americas, held on 11 October 2026 in Jamaica during World Travel Week, from 10 to 15 October. It is therefore not a ranking drawn up by inspectors, but a popularity award the hotel can now display.

For the Royal Suite, it is a comeback. It had already won this category in 2015 and again in 2017; from 2018 to 2025, the title went to the Four Seasons Hotel Toronto and its suites. The Montreal suite thus reclaims a place it had not held for nine years. The same 2026 awards also honoured other addresses around the world, such as the Carlton Tel Aviv, named Israel’s best hotel.

What truly sets this suite apart is its history. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton married here in 1964, and the ceremony took place in the Royal Suite itself, not in one of the hotel’s function rooms. More than sixty years on, it is this wedding, as much as its size, that people first associate with the Royal Suite.

According to the official description from Marriott, owner of the Ritz-Carlton brand, the Royal Suite spans 4,700 square feet, around 435 m², the size of a large house. It brings together three bedrooms, four bathrooms, two living rooms and a separate dining room, plus a butler’s pantry.

The suite has a marble-clad fireplace, and its bathrooms feature a deep soaking tub. The dining room, decorated with murals, seats ten, enough to host a private dinner without leaving the suite.
