Japan is preparing to unveil one of its most highly anticipated openings of the year. Named Aso Retreat HONO, this new luxury hotel will open its doors on 2 November 2026 in Minami-Aso, Kumamoto Prefecture, in the heart of one of the archipelago’s greatest volcanic landscapes. It is born from the regeneration of an existing ryokan, completely redesigned and expanded.
The project is led by List Development, a subsidiary of the real estate group List Group, and entrusted to the operator Onko Chishin, a specialist in intimate Japanese retreats. Its name, “HONO”, refers to hon, the discreet and warm glow of fire that has always accompanied humanity · a nod to the volcanic character of Aso. Bookings have been open since 1 July 2026.
A 17-suite sanctuary in the heart of the Aso caldera
Set on the slopes of the Aso caldera, one of the largest active volcanic craters in the world, the hotel overlooks the Minami-Aso plain and faces the five peaks of Aso (Aso-Gogaku: Takadake, Nakadake, Nekodake, Eboshidake and Kishimadake). The estate spans approximately 87,000 m², guaranteeing privacy and silence, while remaining accessible: Kumamoto Airport is just a 25-minute drive away.

Suites with private thermal baths, facing the volcanoes
The property features 17 suites, ranging from 54 to 150 m², divided between the renovated original building and a newly constructed wing. All feature a private thermal bath, indoors or outdoors, fed by a natural spring · simple, slightly alkaline and hypotonic water, renowned for recovery and relaxation. Several suites add a sauna for a complete wellness experience, shielded from view.

“ASO FORAGING EXPERIENCE”: walking, foraging, lighting the fire
The hotel’s true signature lies in its concept, the “ASO FORAGING EXPERIENCE”. Here, guests do not just contemplate nature: they live in it. Walking through wind-swept meadows, foraging for wild plants, lighting a fire, slipping into a hot spring · these are all gestures that reconnect with an elementary relationship to the earth. A choice that sets Aso Retreat HONO apart from urban palaces and brings it closer to the most exclusive nature retreats.

A “primitive gastronomy” by Yamato Imanishi
The dining experience extends this philosophy. Chef Yamato Imanishi, who trained in France under Michel Bras and worked in Michelin-starred establishments, develops a cuisine he calls “primitive gastronomy“: a menu that follows the cycle of the seasons and unfolds the landscape from the mountains to the sea, using locally foraged ingredients and open-fire cooking. The hotel cultivates its own edible garden · more than thirty varieties of wild herbs, a chestnut grove, and shiitake mushrooms grown on logs.

Onko Chishin and List Development: regenerating a ryokan
For List Development, Aso Retreat HONO marks a first foray into the revitalisation of ryokans, a strategic focus in a Japan where many traditional inns are seeking a new lease of life. By entrusting operations to Onko Chishin, whose properties (Setouchi, Iki, Goto, Otaru…) cultivate a discreet luxury rooted in their territory, the group is betting on an upscale repositioning that respects the location and its heritage, rather than starting from scratch.
Our take
Aso Retreat HONO ticks all the boxes of the underlying trend in luxury travel: exclusivity through nature rather than ostentation. Few rooms, a vast estate, a highly localised experience (the volcano, the meadows, the foraging) and a terroir-driven restaurant led by a chef with a solid background: the promise is coherent and rare on the Japanese market. It remains to be seen, upon opening, how the service is executed and how the balance between nature immersion and the comfort expected at this price point is struck. A property to watch closely for 2026.
