Vauban Citadel in Belle-Île: Accor to Open Emblems Collection Luxury Hotel in 2027

The Vauban Citadel, an emblematic fortress on Belle-Île-en-Mer, is poised to enter a new era, that of luxury hospitality. Far from being a mere renovation, this project, the result of a strategic partnership between Accor and Banque des Territoires, aims to transform this historic treasure into an exceptional hotel destination under the Emblems Collection banner. The announcement of this collaboration confirmed the stakeholders’ desire to reconcile heritage preservation with local economic development, offering a second life to a site that has been closed for several years.

Key Facts
  • The Vauban Citadel in Belle-Île-en-Mer is set to become a luxury hotel: Accor and Banque des Territoires will open the first French Emblems Collection property there in summer 2027.
  • 90 keys (57 rooms, 24 suites, 6 duplexes, 2 apartments, 1 house), two restaurants, a bar, and a wellness area spanning nearly 2,000 m².
  • A public-private partnership breathing new life into a monument closed for years, featuring a redesigned museum and strong local roots (set to be the island’s largest private employer).

A Major Heritage Renaissance

The Vauban Citadel, whose history has woven through centuries, majestically overlooks the entrance to Le Palais port. This monument, which has endured through eras and resisted assaults, has always been a symbol of Brittany’s historical and architectural richness. Closed to the public for several years, it has been given a new lease of life thanks to a vast restoration programme. This ambitious project is not just a real estate operation; it embodies a vision of heritage preservation that integrates a strong economic and tourism dimension. Accor, a major player in global hospitality, has positioned itself to develop and operate this future destination, recognising the site’s unique potential for establishing a luxury property.

Publicité

With its architecture and strategic location, the Vauban Citadel represents an unprecedented challenge and opportunity for the luxury hotel industry. The choice of this site to host the first French Emblems Collection property, the luxury brand launched by Accor, underscores the group’s ambition to offer hotel experiences deeply rooted in local history and culture, while providing the highest standards of excellence. This type of project, which combines historical heritage with contemporary high-end services, is increasingly sought after by a discerning clientele eager for authenticity and immersion.

The Strategic Partnership for Excellence

The realisation of this transformation has been made possible thanks to a strategic partnership between Accor and Banque des Territoires, an entity of the Caisse des Dépôts group. This collaboration illustrates a growing trend where public and private stakeholders join forces for large-scale projects, particularly in heritage enhancement. Banque des Territoires, as a long-term investor, joined the operation via its “Territoires d’Histoire(s)” programme, specifically dedicated to valuing heritage in French regions.

Banque des Territoires’ Commitment

Banque des Territoires’ equity investment provides a solid financial foundation for the project, complementing Accor’s operational expertise. This “Territoires d’Histoire(s)” programme is a powerful lever for converting historical monuments into vibrant places and economic attractions, while respecting their integrity. The Fondation du patrimoine, a partner of Banque des Territoires and the programme sponsored by Stéphane Bern, also provides valuable support. It will notably contribute to the restoration of the Citadel’s museum collections, including paintings, plans, engravings, and ship models, thus ensuring the safeguarding of an invaluable cultural heritage. This tripartite funding model, with Caisse d’Épargne Bretagne-Pays de Loire as the banking partner, demonstrates the complexity and robustness of the financial arrangement required for such undertakings.

Emblems Collection, a New Exceptional Property

Upon its opening, scheduled for summer 2027, the Vauban Citadel will thus host an Emblems Collection hotel with 90 keys. This brand, positioned in the luxury segment, promises unique experiences in emblematic locations. The key distribution has been designed to offer a variety of accommodations: 57 rooms, 24 suites, six duplexes, two apartments, and one house. This variety caters to the expectations of a diverse clientele, from couples seeking intimacy to families or groups desiring more space and independence.

Refined Hotel Offering

Beyond accommodation, the establishment will offer a comprehensive range of high-end services. Two restaurants will enrich the gastronomic offering, inviting guests to discover local flavours elevated by refined cuisine. An elegant bar will complete the experience, providing an ideal setting for moments of relaxation. Dedicated seminar rooms will also position the Citadel as a prime venue for organising professional events, combining a historic setting with modern infrastructure.

An Immersive Wellness Area

The wellness area, spanning an impressive nearly 2,000 m², will be a true haven of peace. Designed to offer a deep relaxation experience, it is expected to integrate state-of-the-art facilities and personalised treatments, in harmony with Belle-Île’s natural environment. This wellness component has become a must-have for luxury properties, responding to a growing demand for stays focused on rejuvenation and balance.

The Museum Reimagined by Studio Adrien Gardère

The project also includes a museum entirely redesigned by Studio Adrien Gardère. This museum trail, accessible to both visitors and residents of Belle-Île-en-Mer, will highlight the citadel’s military and defensive history. It will offer an immersive and contemporary approach, connecting heritage, the surrounding landscapes, the island’s biodiversity, and local memory. This integration of the museum at the heart of the hotel project is an intelligent way to showcase the site’s history and enrich guests’ experiences, while forging a strong link with the local community. Restoration and development work is being carried out under the direction of Valode & Pistre Architectes and Pierre-Antoine Gatier, Chief Architect of Historic Monuments, ensuring rigorous preservation of heritage features while adapting the site for its future uses.

A Model of Local and Sustainable Development

Beyond its heritage and tourism dimensions, the Vauban Citadel project aims to significantly enhance the economic attractiveness of Belle-Île-en-Mer. Accor has clearly stated its desire to make this hotel a driving force for the island’s development. The social impact will be considerable, with the creation of sustainable jobs and stimulated local economic dynamics.

Economic Impact and Territorial Integration

Upon its opening, the Citadel is set to become the island’s largest private employer with over 100 permanent staff and nearly 70 seasonal jobs. This figure attests to the scale of Accor’s commitment and the anticipated positive impact on the local job market. The group has also indicated its intention to prioritise partnerships with local businesses, artisans, producers, and suppliers. This approach, which favours short supply chains and the circular economy, will generate direct economic benefits for the region, thus strengthening the economic fabric of Belle-Île-en-Mer and ensuring the project’s harmonious integration into its environment.
