The palace’s foundation stone was laid in 1535: at the time it was the very first palace to rise on the Riviera di Chiaia, the long promenade that runs along the Bay of Naples.

The future hotel stands next to Villa Pignatelli, a neoclassical residence turned museum. The palace once had a park with gardens, paths and fountains; the project includes generous private gardens for guests.

The palace as it stands today dates from the late 19th century. Between 1889 and 1896, Prince Caravita di Sirignano completely transformed the grand palace of the Count of Syracuse, younger brother of King Ferdinand II of Bourbon.

The salons were filled with furniture, paintings and tapestries from the royal palaces of Naples, Capodimonte and Caserta. Neapolitan aristocrats and crowned heads from across Europe flocked there for balls and receptions. The princes also opened a street linking the Riviera to today’s Rione Sirignano district.

The hotel will have suites only, 46 in total, all billed as spacious. No floor plans or images of the suites have been released yet: the official pictures show the palace before the works.

The restoration has been entrusted to Florentine architect Michele Bönan, who has designed many luxury hotel interiors in Italy. His brief is to restore the palace to its original splendour, with its carved-wood fireplaces, stuccowork and interconnecting salons.

The plans include a roof terrace with a panoramic pool, open to the Bay of Naples. There will also be 2 restaurants, a bar and a large spa; Rocco Forte has not yet named a chef or a treatment brand.

From the Riviera di Chiaia, the bay stretches out to the islands. For those who want to extend their stay, Capri and the Sorrento peninsula are just a boat ride away. The palace will make an ideal base for exploring the whole bay.

Rocco Forte’s first hotel in Naples

Since 2018 the palace has belonged to the family of Nunzio and Anna Colella, who run the fashion brands Gutteridge and Alcott. It is their first step into hospitality: their company, Capri Group, has signed a management agreement with Rocco Forte Hotels.

Nunzio Colella wants to give Naples a hotel that lives up to its character, and Sir Rocco Forte said he was honoured to open in such a fascinating building. Founded in 1996 by Sir Rocco Forte and his sister Olga Polizzi, the family-run group is extending its reach across southern Italy, following the announcement of the Relais del Cardinale in Fasano, in Puglia.

When will Palazzo Sirignano open?

The opening is scheduled for 2027, with no specific month. The project’s official website was still confirming it in October 2026.

Reservations are not yet open and rates have not yet been published.
